| 122.1 | Just keep trying... | FINALY::COLEPC | The SUNBELT Kid.. | Mon Aug 29 1988 15:14 | 11 |
| | I bought the game, but recently got a hold on Zelda II. So I can't
help too much. The weapons are there, you just have to look for
them. You can usually find them in rooms inside the first building.
I don't have the map in front of me, so I can't pin-point the location.
To use the rations, just select the ration under the equipment?
screen and exit back to the main screen. Press either one of the
buttons and your life force should go up.

    Hope this helps.

| | Thanks Pat. I found the first building about 8 screens into the
game. There were 2 soldiers guarding the building and I took them
out but I could not figure out how to get inside. I pushed all around
the perimeter but can't gain entry.
I tried using the rations as you described and nothing happens.

I just have to keep trying. If you discover any other hints, I sure
    could use the help.

    Thanks again for the pointers.

| | I rented the game a couple of weeks ago. I could not get into what
you are refering to as the "building". And I gave up trying to
    get into whatever that was.

What you need to do is get the card-keys, I think there are 8 of them.
I managed to find 1, 2, and 4. These are required to open doors.
Doors can be opened by the proper card-key. The next screen down also
has 2 guards and a couple trucks. One of these trucks will transport
you to a building that you can enter with card-key 1, which you
should have found in one of the trucks by this point. You need to have
the card-key selected to enter a door.

Whenever you locate a new item, always use the radio, you will almost
always get a hint about the object. Rations are used to restore
you life-force. 1 ration will restore you to full strength. At
the beginning you can hold at most 3 rations.

Also use the radio, whenever you free a prisoner. Once you find
a gun, you also need to get ammunition.

I managed to get pistol, machine-gun, grenade-launcher, mines, plastic
explosives, gas-mask, cardboard-box, and binocculars. Once you get the
pistol and ammo, the beginning is alot easier to get thru on a
    continue.

I think the game has some strange quirks, so I probably won't buy
it until/unless it goes below $30.00.

    1) There is no save or password memory. If you power down the game
you are back to square-one with zip.

    2) I don't like the infinite repeat locations.

    3) The typos and grammer mistakes are really excessive.

    4) If you need more rations or ammo, just grab what's there, select
the radio, and when you return to the normal screen just grab them
    again.

    5) If an alarm has gone off and the enemy are after you on the current
screen, just cross over to another screen, and then come back, and the
alarms are off and things are back to normal.

    6) I do like the fact that the game seems to be very extensive and
complex, and requires more thinking and planning than controller
    dexterity.

| | re .3

Sounds to me like you got hold of a defective game. I picked up the
game last night at Lechmere and have found NO grammar or spelling
errors and it DOES indeed have a password save option in it. It
would have been foolish not to. Since a game of this size and
complexity would not be worth the time or effort if it did not have
one. I know with RYGAR I had to leave my machine on for three days
while we solved it during the evening hours. My family did not enjoy
me monopolizing the machine for that period of time. So I have made
it a point not to buy any more (complex and involved) games that
do not offer a password save option.

I only managed to play the game for about 1/2 hour but found it
tough and challenging. This is the way games should be written!

| | Last night I tried again and found CARD 1, went inside and explored
around tanks and jeeps. I haven't found any weapons yet. Guess I'll
just have to keep trying. I didn't try out the password option
as I didn't get far enough to warrant saving things.

This is a real challenging game!

surprises that I thought were pretty good. I never did find a use

| | I have been playing Metal Gear for several days now and have managed
to make some decent progress. I have had one problem. I have come
across (2) tanks, one in building #2 (I think) and one outside.

I have tried mines and grenades to no avail. Any suggestions

    Thanks

| | If one is in the middle of the game and for some reason wants to
SAVE the game, what is the right way?
Via password? How? Some mentioned in earlier note, that this is
    possible, but didn't include how.

    Please help and thanks

Tank outside: you must have 3 stars, which allows you 15 mines.
It takes 3 stars and at least 13 mines to blow up tank.

Tank in building #2: Takes 5 grenades on TOP of the tank to blow
    it up.

Thanks for the info. I found out that I could slip past the "outside"
tank without having to kill it. For the "inside" tank, I will try
    the five grenades.

| 122.38 | Killing Hostages | GIAMEM::GARUFI |  | Wed Apr 05 1989 12:09 | 14 |
| | I borrowed Metal Gear from my little brother and found the game to
be very good because all of the thinking thats involved compared
to most games. By reading the notes I found out that I wasn't suposed
to kill my hostages but it's to late I already did, I thought I
was rescuing them when I made them disappear. Does this mean that
I won't be changing rank so I won't be able to finish the game?

Should I just start from stratch again?

    Any suggestions would be appriciated.

    re. .38

If you killed hostages, its probably a good idea to start over. How
many did you "kill"? More than three and you should definetly stat
    over.

    Good luck

Thanks for the answer. Hmmm...you offer the enemy cigarettes and
it makes it easier to kill them. Sounds like this should be a
Surgeon General's warning on the side of the cigarette pack!

			-< help on 3rd floor Blg 1 >-
	Going after my 3rd star.
I have gotten to the 3rd floor of building one, crossed the
bridge, (after falling off 10 times, my 6 year old did in 1 try),
and have tried to get the Mine Detector and the Professor on the
	other side.
1st. The Mine Detector is protected by two guards. The one
closet to the door keeps turning on the heat panels before
I can knock him off. I can get the first guard, but this
		usually alerts the other guards.
Any clues or hints on how to get these two guys?
Is there any protection from the heat panels?
	Can they be turned off?
2nd.	The professor is protected by two machine gunners which
		move together.
How can I kill these guys?

| | I just got the game for my Birthday last weekend and I just
started playing it yesterday. I had a similar problem that .25 had.
In the first world before you get to the truck I went back from
the area that had the guard dogs into the area with the jeep and
the sleeping guard and got stuck in the bushes!! The only way I
could get out was to end the game by pressing the reset button and
starting all over again. Really wierd glich I'd say. One thing that
I don't like about this game is that the directional controls seem
to be really sluggish and choppy. I am getting much better at the
game and am starting to really enjoy it.

I've noticed that there hasn't been much activity in the METAL
GEAR note lately and was wondering if any of you that have conquered
this game could give me a little advice.

Here's my problem: After I got captured and escaped I got into
the truck that is supposed to take me to card #4 and when the truck
stopped, I got out and then I got back in by mistake. It took me
back to the entrance to Building #1. I went back to the truck where
I'm supposed to get captured and no one was there to capture me.
There doesn't seem to be any other way to get into any of the other
buildings except to get captured and get card #4. If anyone could
help me with this I'd really appreciate it. I can't get much further
into this game if I can't get into any other buildings.

    Thanks Big Boss,

Any hints?? Is the professors "HINT" crucial to battleing the BOSS?
