In the Boston Globes science section, there was a story about
waverettes (or something like that) that is suppose to be a
toolbox of mathematical techniques to compress and decompress
images and sound and so on.
Is there any software, literature, notesfile that would provide
more information.

I think it was "wavelets". There was a reference in the
usenet sci.math group this morning, but I already deleted
it. It should still be available for a few days though
through a usenet feed.
