45.0. "Alphametic solver" by HARE::STAN () Sun Feb 26 1984 00:02
An alphametic is a type of cryptarithm, composed of words that replace
numbers in a mathematical computation. Each letter represents a
digit and no two different digits are represented by the same letter.
For example, you are probably familiar with the classic alphametic:
		S E N D
	      + M O R E
	      ---------
	      M O N E Y
Gilbert and I have been writing programs that automatically solve
addition alphametics. We have been independently working on this
problem for several weeks; each trying to outdo the other in speed
of execution. (This is a good technique for writing code that runs
fast. Our current programs are about 2 decimal orders of magnitude
faster than our first attempts.)
If anyone is interested in the code (or needs an alphametic solved),
contact me or Peter.
