    Hi,
    
    I was talking to a co-worker and we were discussing starting to jog. 
    Then I remembered how much jogging hurts my knees and ankles.  So I was
    trying to come up with something simular.  Because I can go to the spa
    and work out when ever I want to that is not the alternative I am
    looking for.  I wanted to be able to do something like jog a few miles and 
    enjoy the spring and summer weather without hurting my knees and ankles.  
    I am a decent roller skater and roller blader.  What I want to know is 
    "If I were going to jog two miles every other day would roller skating two 
    miles every other day give me the same type of workout?"   Or is roller 
    skating for 45 min. every other day more comparble???  
    
    Oh, and does any one know about how many calories one would burn when 
    roller skating or roller blading.  Is there a caloric difference? Does
    one skate type (roller skates or roller blades) give you a better work
    out opposed to the other skate type???
    
    This might be my "Great alternative" to jogging.  
    
    Please, feel free to suggest any ideas.

|     Roller blading two miles would most definitely NOT give you the same
    workout as jogging two miles.  Roller Blading is easier/faster.  You'd
    have to go much further to get the same workout.  (But not necessarily
    for a longer time.)
    
    There's no way to tell how many calories roller blading burns per
    minute, because you can go any speed.  Probably there's a good estimate
    for calories per mile, but I don't know.
    
    I roller blade from my house to Harvard Square, which is two miles - it
    takes about 15-20 minutes, because it involves frequent stops for traffic,
    have to go slow due to road conditions, etc.  I also roller blade on
    the Arlington/Bedford bike path - I can go 2 miles there in about 10
    minutes, because I can go as fast as my legs will take me.
    
    What really matters is your heart rate.  If you get your heart rate up
    to the same range it would be in if you jog, then roller blading for
    the same length of time (not the same distance) would give you about
    the same workout.
    
    Roller blading is a *great* workout!! :-)  And fun, too!
