| 418.1 | Talk to your doctor and dietition.... | EMASS::SICA | Long and winding road...BUT..! | Wed Mar 22 1989 11:46 | 8 |
| | Work very closely with your doctor. It is not recomended that
    one diets when pregnant, there is a note in here somewhere to that
    effect. Take heart and follow your doctors advice, he can probably,
    in conjunction with a dietition, set up a regular menu that will
    prevent you from gaining, except of course for junior...

| 418.2 | You may not have to gain | ATSE::BLOCK | Hey, today is part of reality, too! | Wed Mar 22 1989 12:50 | 14 |

	Not all doctors agree that massive weight gain during pregnancy is
	necessary. Talk to your obstetrician about good nutrition versus
	calorie counts. I know that Weight Watchers has a modified program
	for pregnant and nursing women; they require a doctor's note for
	you to participate, so I'm sure they have something printed up
	about it that you could get.
	Yes, you will need more protein and other nutrients, but you can
	have proper nutrition without going out of control.
	Good luck,
	Beverly

| | I weighed 210 pounds when I found out I was pregnant. My ideal
    weight is around 130. So don't despair!

    At the time, I was self-employed with no insurance and couldn't
    find a doctor right away that didn't cost an arm and a leg (neither
    of which I could spare). All of them wanted LOTS of money up front,
    and I didn't have it (SINGLE and self-employed, just starting the
    business).

    Anyway, I immediately quit taking ANY kind of medication (aspirin,
    sinus medicine, whatever), quit drinking (although I didn't drink
    that much anyway), and started watching what I ate. I changed my
    diet to be what it should have been all along (and hasn't been since)
    and only gained a total of 22 pounds. I cut out junk food and only
    allowed myself caffeine (tea and soft drinks) from Friday evenings
    to Sundays.

    Result? A very healthy, happy pregnancy and a loss of 32 pounds
    the first week! My daughter was a healthy 8 lb. 10 oz. when she
    was born, and is still a very healthy 2-1/2 year old! I've kept
    her off of junk food except for every once in a while (absolutely
    no chocolate, though), and I'm hoping that her father's "thin" cells
    far outnumber my "fat" cells.

    Of course, I've gained back quite a bit since then...

    Good luck to you and take care of yourself!

    Catherine

| 418.4 | Lose while pregnant! | DELNI::LANE |  | Thu Mar 23 1989 12:12 | 9 |
| | Just wanted to say that my sister-in-law who was really overweight
    (about 290?) lost weight during her pregnancy's! She really did
    great. She ate tons of vegtables and cut out the junk food and
    felt great! She has even kept it off....! I would suggest looking
    into the weight watchers diet. Good luck!

| | When I was pregnant for my first my doctor recommended Weight Watchers.
    I think if you follow the childrens program it allow for enough
    added nutrients.   Good Luck!

| | I was also quite overweight when I got pregnant with my daughter
    (around 218 lbs). I lost 10 lbs while I was pregnant, but that was
    because I had morning, noon, and night sickness the whole nine months.
    Don't despair -- follow what your doctor thinks will be healthy for you
    and your baby.
