I have been trying to get back down to 9 stone 5lbs for a year now,
    after having a cartilege operation. I am 10 stone 7lbs now (5 '4") and
totally disgusted with myself. I gave up smoking on January 1st,
which obviously didn't help matters. I can't fit into many
of my clothes and have just realised that it is affecting my social
life too. I no longer like going to busy pubs or anything, because
I feel so self conscious. I have really tried to diet, believe
me, but they never seem to last more than three weeks. I cannot
afford to join WW at the moment. What can I do - it will be summer
    soon???!!

| Boy - don't we all know how you feel! One way to start burning
fat, and not muscle, is to start doing at least 20-30 minutes of
aerobic activity 4 times a week. This will keep your metobolism
at a high level. Another activity inconjunction with the aerobics
is weightlifting (don't worry - you won't end up looking 'like a

man!') Now the diet that is best for reducing and health is a high
carb (complex) and low fat diet. Some of the hiding places of fat
are milk products, commerical bread/cake/pastery products and, of
course, animal meat. One of the 'tricks' that is recommended for
women (yes, we 'are' different than men) is to eat up to 6 - 8
meals daily. One way to do this is to add 3 snacks (like fruit)
    mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and after dinner.

I've been trying to follow the above plan for the last few months
and its beginning to show. The hardest thing is changing old habits!
Patience is really necessary - remember, it took a long time to
get to where you are now and it will take some time to get to where
    you want to be!
