The word from here, (our secretary) is that you will need to get your
manager to authorize this, get HR's approval, (insurance indemnity etc)
and then get PM&S to set up a cardkey for access. Make sure everyone
knows who he/she is and how long they will be there for.
From my experience, you will also need to have some kind of liason with
the students school (tutor). Work Experience students tend to take up a
lot of time in terms of someone explaining Health and Saftey at Work
(The Health and Saftey at Work Act), security etc. If you or your group
can afford the time, then there is no real reason why you should not be
able to do so.

Thanks for the replies.
Seeing as all secondary schools in Berkshire offer their 15-16 year
olds a week with a local employer during their GCSE course I would have
thought Digital Reading, as a key community member, would have a formal
mechanism in place etc complete with necessary school liason etc. I was
hoping that this note would reveal who that was. However, I realise
this might have been somewhat naive of me.

| The allocation of work experience students used to be done through
DECollege at Decpark, whether this is the case now...who knows?. I used
to organise, via DECollege, work experience students for MCS engineers
at Decpark about 6 years ago.

I'd forgotten about my couple of weeks long ago work-experiencing in
personnel - that must be *years* ago now... 1,2,3,mumble, hmm,
14 years ago it was just arranged with the manager who you'd be
working for. I don't think I took much time for anyone, they just
sat me in the desk (in F2 in the relatively newly opened DEC park),
told me where the diary was kept, where things were filed and how
to use my machine for w/p and printing.
I even volunteered to stay on an extra fortnight in my easter
holiday, then again, I know I'm mad, I've always been mad, just
to quote.. I came back and I've since turned down redundancy
twice, now if someone will just undo the straps on my jacket
sleeves I can drink my coffee.......

It's all covered in the induction course your manager books you on when you
join.

| So everyone who joined after 1974 should have been through this....
(thats when the act came into force).
I've not received any information directly about this (but have seen
mails from various H&S commitees over the years).

I left Digital in June last year and rejoined in March this year. In 1986
when I first joined no-one spoke about the HSWA on my induction course. This
time I didn't have an induction course. (I guess I know enough about Digital
these days)

The real world was *too* slow for me. I didn't get that much work to do, so I
came back to work in NSIS!
And No, I haven't got your brouter manual - I left it at EOL in the computer
room. If it's not there now - well who knows where it is.
