Hi: We have a customer who are interested using Strongarm chip on their switch. They have the follwoing questions on the review stage: 1. How the strongarm chip compatable to Intel X86 ? 2. Can we run Window CE on strongarm ? 3. How many O/S we support now on strongarm ? Sorry for the entry level questions and thanks for your reply. >1. How the strongarm chip compatable to Intel X86 ?
It's not compatable with the x86 - it's much better:
- It costs a lot less ($50 for 200Mhz)
- It has a high clock speed
- It consumes very little power
It is designed to be used as an embedded processor, where
cost and power consumption are important design factors.
>2. Can we run Window CE on strongarm ?
Not currently, but support for it has been announced, and I
believe that work is underway to make this happen.
See http://www.digital.com/semiconductor/press.htm#strongarm
>3. How many O/S we support now on strongarm ?
I don't know the current number, but I know that the list includes
VxWorks, pSOS, RiscOS, Newton OS, JavaOS, NetBSD, Oracle NCOS,
Linux, WinCE. I also believe that there are more operating systems
being ported to StrongARM.
---------------
If their application is a data switch, I suggest you contact
Doug Carrigan ([email protected]) in Palo Alto, CA.
I hope this helps,
Rick

Linux on StrongARM:
- Is there a platform avaiable to consumers, if so any pointers?
- Any performance information?

The platform for the Linux port was the EBSA-110 board, try
Dave Rusling in Reading, UK. I have no idea about the performance
levels.
