Pathworks for osf V6.1eco2
net user command gives following output:
"the device attached to the system is not functioning"
Any hints?

I see you are asking to see if the user exists and data on the user.
Is the drive mounted where the users unix directory exists? Is the
lmx.srv process running or are other net functions also failing.

The user database isn't changed.
I finally could stop the system and run samcheck. It found an
inconstistancy for two users. Hopefully a repair will solve this.
I started a prune of the acl database but it takes time before it
finish.
Lmx.srv's are running but many of them are swapped out!
Other net commands seems to be working.
One other problem is that the user replication didn't work to the BDC.
