Good morning...
I have a Netware 3.12 server that is showing some problems that I
haven't been able to figure out.
This system is a DECpc XL 486/66D2. It has 94MByte RAM, and three
NCR scsi buses (one embedded and two PCI). On the first (embedded) we
have two RZ28-E drives. One the second we have two RZ28-VAs and two
RZ29B-VAs (in a Digital 4 pack tower -- the model escapes me). On the
third scsi we have a CD tower with seven SCSI CDs, but a smart
controller showing the tower as one ID to the system.
At one point there were the four RZ28s and the CD tower and all was
fine. We then added the two RZ29s (along with memory to get to the
96MByte). The two RZ28s on scsi bus 2 mirro the two RZ28s on the
embedded. The Rz29s are mirrors of themselves. With the RZ29s we start
experiencing problems after about a week of uptime. The problem starts
with the CDs dropping off line and then the internals dropping off
line. We have stayed up in the past because the mirrors in the external
box.
Last night the external drives had thier amber lights come on (well
three of the four). This morning the CDs went down without a way of
getting them back without a reboot. We are to reboot the server before
the internal scsi drops off line. With a reboot I believe we'll get
another week of problem free operation.
By the way at this point there is 74% of resources available or at
least thats the indication.
The last thing we did to troubleshoot was replace the DECpc 486
with a Celebris XL590 moving the memory etc from the DECpc to the
XL590. Any possible fixes and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bruce Rose

| 2129.1 | Any console errors? | NEMAIL::HASLETT | Mon Mar 17 1997 11:48 | 14 | |
Bruce,
Are you getting any error messages on the console? If your
not sure load the conlog.nlm, you can print the text file
sys:etc\console.log to see if any errors were reported.
Also, what is the bus speed set for the CD's scsi controller?
You may want to try things like a lower scsi(CD) bus speed,
adjusting the bus master, IRQ settings and check your scsi
bus termination. Is there a tape drive hanging off of any of
these contollers ie. you may have gone beyond the bus length
limits when you added the new drives.
If it still fails you may also want to try some different scsi
controllers like Adaptec 2940.
