Some consider that some men have TWO illnesses.
The first is impotency. A fact of life that occurs in people. The
inability to get aroused.
The second, is "Don't care". I believe (based on some group
discussions with singles, aquaintences, and 'others') that some
men "look forward" and enjoy a feeling of impotency.
It is remotely possible that some men feel as "trapped" by the sex game
as some women feel used by it.
When these men (people ?) get hit with 'impotency', and the allegedly
'natural instinct' no longer rears its ugly head, the 'victim' is
likewise freed from 'pursuing' and can settle down to a normal
existence of calmness and tranquility not otherwise possible. In
short, if they are unmarried, there is no reason to do so; if they
are single; it doesn't matter. If they are married to an otherwise
celibate person; they both can rejoice.
It seems only to be a tragedy if they impotency occurs, and the
victim would choose otherwise (then as with any other dysfunctionality,
it is up to the 'victim' to seek help (treatment)).
Of course, I have no medical knowledge on this problem, just my
opinion.

I agree with Bob, perhaps he's simply "relieved" for the first
time since he was "13" years old....
But Bob, why quote "natural instinct" as if it's some sorta
label and not true, also, why do you consider this natural part
of a man "ugly" as in "rears it's ugly head"?
We men are the ones who make it ugly; as a given, it's as beautiful
as can be!
To .0, sorry to hear that the man you loved chose to revel in
his relief and not "get himself fixed up" or whatever.

You don't need a doctor for that!
remember that it is only an illness to another person!
and that doctors treat symptoms not causes!!!

There are medical reasons for impotence. Diabetes causes a
numbing of the sensory nerves (knew a guy who had diabetes
and walked across a hot topped driveway without feeling it)
as well as a restriction of blood flow to (all) the extremities.
Between the two...
Chronic alcoholism will also affect potency, as will some injuries
to the back. (And para- or quadraplegics are not necessilary im-
potent)
I'm told not much can be done for treatment, although a penile implant
is possible.
(gotta go--system crashing)

| Recognizing that this is a sensitive subject for many men, let me
remind our readers that it is possible to contribute anonymously.
Simply send the text to one of the moderators and ask him to post
the reply for you.
Impotence has been too long regarded as a topic for derision and
a joke. It's no joke to the men who suffer from it. Whether the
cause be biologic or psychologic, the problem is real and the
effects can be devastating.
I would encourage discussion on this topic, and perhaps increase
everyone's understanding of the causes and effects of impotence.

| I know it's been awhile, but I was just wondering if the moderators
would consider changing the title of this topic to:"Impotency...the
unspoken illness" as there is no other topic on impotency in this
file and it really is an issue for men to discuss.

| The following reply has been contributed by a member of our community
who wishes to remain anonymous.
I went to a urologist because I've been having a semi-problem...i.e.
sometimes it works better than others.
The doctor says there is a reasonably good possibility that the problem
is organic, with my circulation problems and the hypertension medicine.
He didn't see any real need to go thru extensive testing to try to
confirm it, because surgically curing it would be virtually impossible
under these circunstances.
There are 3-4 ways to work around that. One is a simple implant, but it
would be a permanent thing. When through using my penis for what it's
supposed to be used for, I could bend it down, kind of out of the way,
but it wouldn't soften up. A variation is putting a small pump in the
scrotum, and pump it up when I want to use it for pleasure. But my
insurance plan won't cover that, because it supposedly isn't perfected
yet. I'd have to cover the difference in the two procedures, which
would be about $6000. No way. And I don't think I want a permanent
erection, that I just bend to suit the moment.
They have a pump that can be put over the penis, then you just pump it
to pull pull a vacuum, making the penis erect, then put a rubber ring
over the base of the penis, which is supposed to keep it hard. That
has a suggested time limit of around 30 minutes, after which you
should take it off. I believe there is a danger factor there. The pump
is really the pits, though. I was shown one.
Or, whenever your getting ready for some romance, you can give yourself
a little injection right at the base of the penis (I believe), and it
is supposed to be ready to go within about 5 minutes, and they set the
dose to give you about 1/2 hour. The best of all the deals, I
personally believe.
That's what I've found. Based on the notion that the problem is below
and not above the neck.
