Some of the fragrances based on floral smells (roses etc...) seem to
trigger my hay fever sneeze reaction (purely pschosomatic I presume
    - they don't put pollen in the stuff do they?). Not a good omen for
    a friendship ...

| | I prefer the women not wear fragrances. Few women need them to
"smell good" if they are clean. If they are worn I prefer them
to be light. I have a sensitive nose and strong scents will get
my sinuses going non-stop in no time flat. This tends to make me
very uncomfortable and guarantees that I will not be good company.

If they are worn, I like floral smells in general. My wife wears
White Linen which I like but I can't describe how it smells.

| | First, to Ian, allergies aren't only caused by pollen. My father
was allergic to almost all perfumes and every after shave except
    Mennen's. Now, I can't smell Mennen's without getting depressed
because it reminds me of him. He was also allergic to incense,
so I wasn't allowed to burn it in the house. But, I'm quickly getting
    off the track.

As stated in .2, I don't like strong scents. Following some women
down the hall almost nauseates me. But I do like just a hint of
something floral, roses and lilacs come to mind. I *love* anything
that smells like a rose. I also like Emeraud.

| | I was once told by a man that the best smell he had ever smelled,
was when he first started dating his wife. This was during the
Depression. He finally broke down and asked her what it was, because
it was so familiar, yet he couldn't place the smell.

Vanilla! Straight out of the bottle in her mothers kitchen. She
dabbed a bit on her neck, and called it good.

    Interesting!?!?!?!?!

I find just a hint of perfume very pleasant, but anything beyond
that is too much. If I'm sitting right next to a woman and can
smell it, that's about the right amount.

The olfactory nerves are the most direct sensory route to the brain,
so when it comes to perfume, a little goes a long way. Of course,
plain old clean hair and skin smells terrific, too.

| | again, i'd prefer that the mad ave types were unable to make us
feel insecure about our natural aromas... i think women smell fine
    without any additives.

i dislike the idea of putting a lot of chemicals on one's body,
but if it makes you feel better, that's your business. i also don't
think that perfume tastes very good.

similarly, i don't see the need for deodorant. to my mind, the ready
availability of soap and hot water obviates any need for deodorant,
in spite of mad ave. and deodorant really tastes awful!

I'd have to agree with some of the previous sentiments
that most perfumes taste awful, so I think the best
scent is only best for the situation, ... a romantic
evening at home doesn't require any added scents.

One thing I've noticed though, is that certain perfumes will
always remind me of certain women. This has its good and
        bad points...

God, some of you guys are missing out! Granted, some PEOPLE
can use some AWFUL stuff but those that know what they are doing
are really enjoyable to smell. I'm not much into knowing the names
of womens perfume. I remember the person. :-) There are certain
women friends that when they wear the right stuff drive me nuts!
They are usually wearing something like Opium or as equally attractive
but like I said in the Men Scents topic, it depends on the person.

| | This is a reply to my earlier reply. What I stated before goes for
*if* a woman is going to wear a fragrance. I do think that a woman
smells nice right after a shower, but that only lasts for a very
short time. After that, I don't detect any fragrance at all and
if its not there, I don't even notice. Anything is better than
B.O. or strong perfume. The absolute worst odor is from someone
trying to cover B.O. with perfume or cologne. Major yucko!

I like to bury my nose into my wife's hair because it smells like
the apple scented shampoo that we use.

There are popular places to put perfume (the "pulse points") that
are also popular nibbling points, hence the comments about taste.

I can't name a specific perfume I like on women, but I do recall
reading that some posh New York restaurant prohibits the use
    of Giorgio by its patrons!

reactions in some people. Although normally it doesn't
(physically) bother me, during hay fever season being around

Smelling someone from around a corner before you see them

You have to remember that scents smell differently when
actually 'on' the person... so what smells good out of the
bottle may smell terrible on a person and will smell differently
on different people (as was already pointed out somewhere, I
    believe).

From that stand-point it's too bad that we (yes, women do
it too,) associate scents with the people we have known who have
worn them. [ Aramis is one I don't care for because of 'who'
wore it that I knew some years ago. ] Interesting, eh???

by Nina Ricci, and my nighttime cologne is Zen by Shiseido. I do
have the real parfume (yes, that is the correct spelling according
to the box on my dresser), but wear that only on extremely special

The memory aspect of special scents is the benefit I most enjoy.
I can't say that I constantly remember the scent, but when I smell
it, a certain perfume brings back vivid memories of a long past
love. I also agree with the 'light touch' principle of perfuming.
I actually remember the scent more than her face (quite lovely)
which has long since faded a bit in my memory.
