| Obviously, the whole story is at decwet::visual as pointed out in the previous note. But Visual C++ V5.0 for Alpha has been released to manufacturing - we are only a couple weeks behind the Intel release. Great job on the part of our engineers. tgc | |||||

| Alpha VC++ major releases lag Intel's by a month or two.
    What the customer is referring to is the now defunct Visual C++
    subscription plan which was available only on Intel. By paying a
    higher price, the Intel customer was provided additional versions when
    they came out, even though these versions were not product. So a
    customer, by buying a V4.0 subscription, would get V4.1 and V4.2, even
    though there is no product called V4.1 or V4.2. This scheme caused too
    much grief to Microsoft, so they discontinued it.

    Before Microsoft discontinued it, they did bring out VC++ V4.1 and V4.2B
    for alpha, but they were only available as patch kits to VC++ V4.0, and
    customer's could only get them by working through Microsoft product
    support. Information on Alpha VC++ V4.1 and V4.2B is available in the
    decwet::visual notes conference.

    Starting with VC++ V5.0 (which is available now for both Alpha and Intel),
    Alpha will still lag Intel by one or two months, but the Alpha distribution
    should be consistent with the Intel distribution.
