    We were trying to add a 2gb memory board into a system that
    already contained a 512mg memory board. The system is a VAX7820
    running console firmware 4.3. The 2gb memory board is in slot 2 
    and the 512mb memory board is in  slot 3.
    
    When we added the 2gb memory board the console level would show 
    the memory boards as: slot 2 2gb (A0) and slot 3 256mb(B0).
    
    If we removed the 2gb memory board from slot 2, the slot 3 board
    would show up as: 512mg(A0).
    
    This appears to be a console firmware problem. Has anyone else seen
    this behavior???
    
    I suggested they take the console firmware back to rv 4.2 but they had
    already pulled the 512mg memory board and rebooted the system with
    only the 2gb memory board installed.

	If memory (no punn intended) servers me right...you need a different backplane for the larger memory...my head is hurting from trying to think back to 1985 when i last worked on one of these beasts...! Lots o luck, Bill

	I have some 77xx's that started life as 76xx's, and have a mix of 512Mb and 2Gb boards running from 4.0 to 4.3 console software and have never replaced a backplane. I don't think a 7800 is any different, although I haven't worked on one. Larry

	The 78xx is only a module change. The platform for the 76XX,77XX and 78XX is identical. We are trying to hunt up a 512meg board here in engineering to try this. I have never encountered the symptom described in .0. It sounds a little odd. I don't believe that version 4.3 has anything to do with what was described since there were no code changes inthe console dealing with memory. Jim Sadin AVSRPE

	We finally got our 512meg module back. We set up the configuration in the base note and we did not see the same results. Our system configured the memory correctly. I'm not sure what or why this system exhibited those symptoms. Was there any manual interleave scripts left over from a previous configuration? I'm at a loss to explain how this could happen.
