| 368.1 | My thoughts on the Carnival | SENIOR::IGNACHUCK | Native Maynardian | Sat Apr 25 1992 18:38 | 19 |
| | As one who also loved to go the Crowe Park carnivals, I dearly
miss what was an annual event the last week in June, right after school
got out and just before the Fourth of July.

If I remember correctly, the last couple of years of the carnival were
*highlighted* by rather poorly run honky tonk outfits that cheated the
customers, and beer sales that encouraged rowdies and fights. Also,
I think the American Legion ran the carnival and finally gave up after
too many incidents. The Police did not have much fun during the last
    few years of the Carnival.

NOW, if we could tie a Town Carnival into the Maynard Elks Road Race
and make this a *real* MAYNARD IN MAY CELEBRATION, complete with
Saturday night fireworks prior to the road race, we could really have
an annual Town Party. We could have a full week of MAYNARD IN MAY,
and the Chamber of Commerce could use this as a major promotion.

    Just a thought.....

| | Well, if you need any 'ins' into REPUTABLE amusement companies,
lemme know. I personally know a lot of professional companies
(no liquor in the show!!) who run a top notch biz. FYI.

Buck, who also misses the fireworks!!

| | Well speaking as an officer in the Maynard Elks, we would love to help
tie the Road Race into a Weekend or Week Long Festival. After moving
the Race to April last year which wresulted in Disaster, our Beloved
Meet Director has been convinced to LEAVE Maynar in May in MAY. Two
years ago George Shaw worked on trying to make it a weekend event with
the Merchans but now we have NO merchants, well almost anyway. But
seriously lets talk about working to make the 3rd week in May a big
Spring kickoff and Maynard Pride day. The ELKS will help.

| | It is my understanding that the carnivals stopped after the Green
Meadow School was built. Either 'someone' decided, or there is a law
somewhere that prohibits certain events happening too close to school
    property. Opportunity for vandalism?

| | I was attending Green Meadow School when carnivals came to town, so
that can't be the reason they stopped.
I seem to recall something about Maynard teenage girls gawking at the
carnival guys, which led to a few close calls when the guys responded.
There was also the beer wagon... that caused problems for all who
attended the carnival. Public drunks are not the scene for kids to watch
at a carnival. Maynard DID have it's share of public drunks even then!

Same with me. I remember being in the 4th grade and STARING out the
window for 8 solid hours into the field as they rolled in and setup!

Ahhh, the good ole days...wish it could come back this way...

| 368.7 | Daydream believer.... | TAN::DONAHUE | OH! Do you still work here? | Thu Jun 11 1992 11:45 | 15 |
| | I was SURE that I was not alone while staring out the window. I think
everybody was daydreaming the whole week the carnival was in town.
Do you suppose that all the teachers stopped the carnivals so that they
could teach their classes???? :-) Of course, the carnival was always
near the end of the school year, so I'm sure the attention span was not
up to par, as it was!!
Now that I have a little boy of my own, I'm wishing he could experience
some of the stuff I took for granted when I was young. Not just
carnivals, but things like walking downtown by yourself for the first
time or riding your bike to school, WITH OUT FEAR OF GETTING PICKED UP,
    MOLESTED, ETC.
    But that's another subject.....

I am sure Maynards finest will be sure it is not a carnival.
    what ever that means.

| | Another year goes by -- the Circus comes to town and plants itself
at Crowe Park for a weekend, yet I still don't understand why the
town won't book a carnival route through here?!? Acton still books
L&L Amusements yearly at A/B High School, are they having any serious
social problems as a result?? I think not...

| | I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but what benefit does a carnival have
for the Town of Maynard? The town isn't in the entertainment business.
A carnival is a fund raising event. The American Legion used to
organize the old carnival and I believe the Acton Lions Club does the
    same in Acton.

Somebody on my van was watching the fireworks in Acton on the 4th and
somebody threw a rock into the crowd. It landed on his nose and did a
    fair bit of damage.
