-<an epidemic?>-
Around Christmas, there was a water-main break on Main Street, in
front of Tory's ["T.C. Lando's" for the uninitiated] and across
from Video Paradise. Today, the section of Rt. 27 between Nason
and Concord Streets is being dug up.
Anybody know what's up?

I live in Acton not far from Rte 27. Last weekend, a water main
somewhere on rte 27 broke which ended up severely affecting our
water (it had lots of air in it, turned brown for awhile (yech)
and had lots of icky sticky little pieces of carbon in it.
needless to say, everyone _i_ talked to was using either boiled
or bottled water for a few days.

A long cold spell like we just had is very hard on the
pipes (OLD pipes!). They tend to freeze and so does the ground
around them (The frost line gets lower than usual.) This cracks
them, and when it warms up enough for the ground to partially
thaw, the leak shows up. It's been "warm" the last few days.

This is standard water works procedure in all towns.
First, a massive project to replace crumbling center of town pipes
is conducted at great expense, and the roads are resurfaced and
a credit to the town.
Then we get some "cold" days, such as the Florida-based contractor
had not previously experienced, and its time to rip up the middle
of town again.
Just joking, Maynard !! Maybe the toxic waste in the Assabet chewed
through the new piping "more quickly than expected" !!

The water pipes was not a part of the reconstruction of the down
town. The $%$#^@& state whould not pay for it. So we are deal with
80-90 year old water pipes.
