It was "Titanic" , 1953, starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck,
Robert Wagner, Richard Basehart, and Thelma Ritter.
Won an Oscar for best script. Doesn't seem to be available on tape.
What an ending, even it was less accurate than a "Night to Remember"

| The 1958 "A Night to Remember" is pretty faithful to the book of the
same name by Walter Lord. This is one of my favorite movies.
Supposedly, it's Sean Connery's first onscreen role, but I've never
been able to pick him out for certain. I think he's a seaman lowering
one of the lifeboats.

| While it's true that "Titanic" was more of a prototypical disaster
movie and didn't stick quite as close to the facts as other Titanic
films, I admit to liking it very much; the Webb/Stanwyck sub-plot was
melodramatic, but the two of them carried it off quite well.
"A Night to Remember" (the movie) didn't stick with me as well, perhaps
because - being more accurate - it blended in with all the books I've
read about the disaster (including Lord's book, of course).
"S.O.S. Titanic" was a fairly recent remake; I think it claimed
considerable accuracy, and had some good individual performances, but
as I recall it just wasn't very interesting - if you want a Titanic
movie, pick either of the other two. [Or check out the National
Geographic documentaries about the sinking and about the rediscovery of
the ship.]
[I suppose I could mention "Raise the Titanic," just for completeness'
sake; this is a guilty-pleasure movie for me, because I found most of
the movie silly and rather boring, but I *loved* the ship-raising
scene, however improbable it was...]

Do you think he was one of the single men who met up with the [Swedish?]
emigrant family with a daughter who they later helped get to the boat
deck? I've wondered about that, but it doesn't quite look like him.

Except that "A Night to Remember" is not listed in his filmography
under "As an Actor". Do they have an "As an Extra" category?

| There was a version of the Titanic story made in the very early days of
"talkies" with all the microphones on set. This lead to some of the
most stayed acting anywhere ever. There is a sequence of Captain Smith
that I seen more than once as an example of how not to act stessed out.
He just stands there looking over the rail and trying not to shuffle his
feet. I'm afraid I can't remember the name but the vibrations in the
ether say RKO.
