| | My Dad loved this movie, probably for the BB scene ("You're gonna shoot
your eye out!"). It gave him an excuse to relate his own, similiar
BB/shoot your eye out story yet another time... :)

For a while, this movie kept cropping up around Xmas. It seemed
drastically underwatched (I think, once of the years, it came out with
the Dudley Moore vehicle "Santa Claus -- the Movie", which, as I
understand it, was not very good. And so "A Christmas Story" may have
    suffered from "similiar theme"-itis.

I'm not sure. It was cute enough, and not bad.

| | This is my all-time favorite Christmas movie. My favorite scene:
Having duck for Christmas dinner in a Chinese restaurant because the
neighborhood dogs stole the turkey. "The duck is smiling at us.
    <CHOP>"

Viewing is an annual event at our house.

| | Based on the stories of Indiana icon Jean Sheppard (sp?), mostly from
"In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash". An enjoyable movie by a
director that mostly delivers dreck - Bob Clark, responsible for
    "Porky's" and other horrors.

| | I guess I shouldn't admit that I kinda like "Porky's", in a juvenille
    humor sort of way. :)

Of course I haven't seen it since, well, since it came out. I was
    probably much more juvenille then....

| | For the first time in this conference, I'm completely stumped: I haven't
heard of this film at all. Would somebody add a little information
about it, such as who's in it and when it was made?

    Thanks.

| 559.8 | Is this the one? | 58378::P_CHAPLINSKY |  | Thu May 26 1994 08:13 | 12 |
| | Is this the movie where the father wins (or something like this) a
lamp where the base is a sexy female leg and he displays it in the
    front window of their house?

Another scene, if I have the correct movie, which is pretty funny,
is about the younger child getting dressed to go outside to play
in the snow. The mother bundles him up so much that when he falls
    he cannot get back up.

I hope it's the same movie as I'd love to see a sequel.

| | Probably came out late 70's, early 80's. Starred Darren McGavin as the
Dad, and other people that I cannot remember. Was basically the story
of a boy's Christmas kinda gone wrong (hence, eating duck in a Chinese
Restraunt for Xmas dinner). One of those anecdotal type movies.

I don't believe it did particularly well at the box office, but for
the next few years (before videotape really caught on), it was
    re-released around the holidays.

One of the best comedies ever filmed, imho. It's terrificly funny and
nostaligic. You'll probably enjoy it more if your middle aged or older.
Many of the references may no longer apply to childhood, although I think
most will (at least in this country).
How about that bunny costume that Peter Billingsly had to wear because his
aunt gave it to him?

| | Thanks Linda for the reply - I really enjoyed this movie. I saw
it on television some years back with my husband. We laughed and
still to this day talk about some of the scenes; especially when
we bundle up our two and one-year old for -30C degree weather.

I hope the sequel is as good!

Did he ever get the 'red-rider' BB gun? I saw this years ago and
don't remember how it ended. I think he may have got a gun and indeed
got shot in the eye. I think he lied and said something else
happended. Just can't remember. Must go out and rent it! I do
    remember laughing a lot!!!

Yup he got his pride and joy!!!!! and yes he got hurt - it looked like
the gun had a mean kick back and it cut him under the eye - he told
his mom he got hit with an icicle....

It was a very good movie - I'm glad I finally saw it

| | One of the family favorites. Don't have any idea how many times we have
watched this. Jean Shepard is the narrator and used to have a radio
show. He has also written a lot of short stories which were published
in Playboy. A lot of Army stories and all funny. Actually had a chance
to hear him speak one fraternity rush weekend at college and a lot of
us hung around to b.s. with him after. Great guy and lots of laughs.
Strongly recommend this one to all who have not seen it. Everyone I
have loaned my copy to has greatly enjoyed it.

Jean Shepard - Try to find a copy of his short stories. My all time
favorite is "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" which is about
his highschool junior prom. A lot of his stories mention the character
Scut Farkas who is the mean nasty kid in Christmas Story.

My favorite scene - where Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) is helping his
Dad (Darren McGavin) change the tire and knocks the lug nuts into the
snow. "Ralphie! Where did you learn such language?"

Great, absolutely great. One other noter mentioned the movie with
Dudley Moore playing an elf, think it's "Santa Claus - the movie".
Whatever it isn't worth a rental fee and looks particulary poor
    compared to "Christmas Story".

Very good movie... Always watched around Christmas..

I love when the Dad wins the leg lamp and he's reading the
box when delivered "oh Boy, Look Fragile" But he
pronounces it F-R-A-J-E-E-L-A-Y.... "Must be Italian"

Pretty funny... Actually very funny movie... always
helps to put me in the christmas spirit.

| | French, I thought...
I watched it at the theaters when it came out with my Grandma, sisters,
aunt, and twelve year old cousin. Everyone laughed out loud.
(The period of the film late 40s.early 50s, made the folks very
misty. I guess they were very accurate with all the props)

Great movie, just don't sit too close to the TeeVee, you'll put
    your eye out.
Definitely wait until after Thanksgiving before you watch it!!!!!

| | I love the sceen where one of the boys "Triple Dog Dares" another boy
to put his tongue on the flagpole. Of course his tongue gets stuck
just as the recess bell rings and all of the kids leave this poor boy
    attached to the pole.

My kids love it when Ralphie's mother is trying to get his little
brother to eat. The brother keeps refusing to put any food in his
mouth so the mother tells him to eat his mashed potatoes like a pig.
The little brother burys his face in his plate snorts and gobbles down
    the food.

We watch this movie probably four times each holiday season.
    Never gets dull, only funnier.

I love the narration during that part; "Stinky (whatever his name was)

going directly into the triple dog dare...".
    (Or something like that)
    Great flick!
