| I almost completely disagree with the previous review. Shirley
MacLaine was perfect in the role of Tess. She obviously enjoyed
the perks that came with being a former first lady, but still wanted to
be her own person. It was that conflict that drove the movie. To me,
it would have been easy for this movie to go over the edge and turn
into a slapstick farce. Instead, despite her bombastic personality,
Shirley actually underplayed her character, as did Nicolas Cage as
her favorite secret service agent. Often, they let a glance or a
facial expression carry an entire scene. Very well done.
My problem with the film was a completely gratuitous and unnecessary
ending. There was little justification for it; in fact, it seemed
added on, which I understand it was, since apparently preview audiences
disliked the original ending. Whatever that was, it had to be better
than the last 20 minutes they have now, which almost spoiled the entire
movie for me.

| I have to agree with 495.0: this was a disappoint, and
for exactly the reasons stated. Pick it up on 2-for-1
night at the video store. No reason in the world to pay
theatre prices for this. Nothing interesting or unique
is happening on-screen, and the "plot" is pointless.
Ah, well, the actors work hard, but there's nothing there.

| Can someone do a "spoiler" and tell me how it ended?
I get interested as opposed to loosing interest when I sometimes
know the ending....I was going to go see this at the theatre
but now I'll wait for video rental

| Well,
Remember, read this only if you REALLY want to know the ending!
Okay. Tess gets kidnapped, but the SS don't move right away because she
has gotten her driver to take her for a drive without a SSA a few times
before. When she does not come back, the main guy(For some reason his
name escapes me) says to call Washington, which means to get Washington
involved in the search. Well, when they get there , they make the SSA's
feel like crap, by saying that 5 grown men lose a little old lady and
stuff like that. Well, the driver of the car that drives Tess around
was burnt on the neck while she was kidnapped. So two of the SSA go to
the hospital and find out he had kidnapped Tess for his brother and
his wife. They figured that out be looking at the burns on his neck,
they were made by a cigarette ligghter which would be Tess's only
weapon in the back seat. So, they find the cottage and it turns out
they buried Tess underground, with on a pipe for air and food. So, they
dig her up, and the put her on the helicopter. But, being the stubborn
lady that she is, she says that she won't go anywhere without her
SSA's. So the driver makes all the Washington guys get off the
helicopter, and the SSA get on, with a happy reunion with all of them
and Tess.
There. Thats the best I could do. Well, I liked this movie. I found it
funny, and at times heart wrenching. ****1/2 out of *****!!!

| Another big thumbs down here. It's only a 99 minute long
movie, and the first 2/3's are so BORING! The final 1/3 was
good, but not good enough to redeem the whole movie.

| Rented this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I thought Nicolas
Cage and Shirley McLain did a great job. Shirley plays the crabby old
lady perfectly - and as another noter said - a lot of interaction is
very subtle.
for example - you wonder why she wants Cage to stay on as the SAIC
(Special agent in charge... he makes a point of his title to her, to
say that's he's not just some junior level yo-yo) since they are always
fighting,when she could probably have someone else who would do
whatever she wants. Then, you "see" the reason when she's watching a
video of the tv coverage of her husband's funeral.
I've never really liked Cage (or maybe it was just the files he's been
in) but you could really sense his frustration with the situation. He
makes up his mind, takes a stand and then the president yells and gives
him no choice. (as a side note, has there been a movie lately that
showed a President of the US in a good light? All the ones I can think
of portray him as a real sob...) Throughout the movie you see him
changing and getting closer to Tess. Then, towards the end, he risks
not only his career, but being arrested, to help her.
And I thought the end scene was great - with the fight over the wheel
chair.
Good rental if you're looking to be entertainned.
