| | I missed Akira on 4 but have had it on video for a while - my wife
    watched the first few minutes of the city exploding before she realised
    it is animated. I would like to buy more but find them expensive.
    Forbidden Planet does a few and also sells magazines devoted to
    Japanese animation.

    BTW I think Akira is technically 'anime' - 'manga' are more comic
    books. The editor of 'Manga Mania' got quite heated on this topic in
    the last issue as manga are being lumped in with 'Legend of the
    Overfiend' style excesses.

'Akira' has been on Criterion LaserDisk for sometime (at around US$125)
and on video for longer. If you liked that and believe the magazine
'Wired' (the magazine for gerbils on speed), Akira Kurosawa, Jean
"Moebius" Gerard, and the animation team from 'Akira' are putting
together a new movie based on 'The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius'
which would be something if it is ever finished...

| 426.4 | any unwanted manga tokens? :-) | 45211::PARKER_A |  | Thu Jan 20 1994 05:18 | 7 |
| | Prices range from around 7.99 pounds for multi-part titles such as
    Crying Freeman, to 12.99 for titles like Akira and 23.00(!!) for the
    Bublegum wars series (although I don't think these are manga films,
    and i'm not sure why they are so highly priced). I was reading an
    article in Home Entertainment that said the company behind the Manga
    label have a release schedule till 1996 with about 2 titles coming out
    a month!

    I wonder how long it takes to make one of these little beauties and if
    they'll eventually do dubbed copies.

| | As someone mentioned before, I think, the title of this note should
    probably be changed to read Anime -- Akira, not manga. Manga is
    basically Japanese comic books, as was Akira in its original forms.
    Anime = animation.

Akira flicks from the local chain store. Always enjoyable.

| | I was wondering if there was a topic about manga, anime, etc, and since
    I am a fan of Japanese animation, I was glad to find this topic. I own
    69 anime videos, the majority of them being Manga and a few Kiseki
    ones. When I refer to manga and kiseki, I am just refering to the
    distribution companies and not whether they are comic strips or not.

    I do own Akira and would have to say that it is a brilliant cyberpunk
    adventure and the animation is superb. I do have plans to add to my
    collection soon as haven't bought one for a while now, the last one
    being" Streetfighter II" (The Animated Movie) which is
    fantastic (Streetfighter II fan).

    The videos I own range from the aforementioned Akira, Legend of the
    Overfiend (parts 1&2), all 12 parts of The Guyver, Dominion Tank Police
    (Acts 1-4 and the new Dominion series), Ninja Scroll, the popular Fist
    of the North Star......

    I subscribe to Manga Mania, so am kept up to date with future releases
    and projects in the works, so if you have a question you want answered,
    then I might be able to help if I can.
                                          Make mine Manga!

    I saw Akira, cool animation and whatnot, I just had a hard time trying
    to figure out what was up with the kid with the powers he was gaining,
    and what Akira actually is, etc....I may have to get it later. I want
    to find Legend of Overfiend, but have not seen it in video stores. Who
    would have this? And there are 12 parts to the guyver? Now this is
    related to the 2 part strange (really strange) moview with Mark Hamill
    in part two I believe?? Let me know or email me at msgaxp::msoucy or
    subsys::msoucy.

| 426.13 | The Guyver | VYGER::GIBSONJ | STRUM, The best in the West | Thu Dec 14 1995 22:59 | 23 |
| | Manga video's "The Guyver" does come in 12 parts and as I said
    previously, I own them all. The animation in the first 6 parts are of
    a high standard as is the detail, unfortunately, this high standard
    does drop from part 7 onwards but it is still good. As for it being
    related to "Mutronics" (the Mark Hamill movie), the only similarities
    are the Guyver, Zoanoids, The Kronos Corporation (the baddies) and your
    basic storyline of baddies trying to take over the world. The
    characters are, however, different. In the animation, the main
    character/hero is Sho Fukamachi and in Mutronics, the main
    character/hero is Sean Barker. In all honesty, the film has its
    moments and is an enjoyable watch but is nothing special. However,
    there is a sequel.

    Guyver:Dark Hero takes place several years after the events of
    Mutronics and has a different actor playing as Sean. This is a far
    better film with a good storyline and some spectacular martial arts
    action as well as the special effects, the best scene is when Sean calls
    for the Guyver after jumping off a cliff.

    P.S. Mark Hamill is not the hero of Mutronics if you were wondering.
