415.0. "Sister Act II" by 16913::MILLS_MA (To Thine own self be True) Mon Jan 03 1994 12:45
I didn't see a note already entered for this, if there is, MOD, please
    feel free to move this.

Went to see it this last weekend. A (not too surprising)
    disappointment.

Even through Sister Act was a formula picture, the characters made it
a truly enjoyable feel-good movie. Not so SAII. A totally predictable
tale with two dimentsional characters, none that anyone would ever be
    remotely interested in.

The editing was poor. More about this under spoiler notes.

This one should have been a TV movie, at best. If you are a die-hard
Whoopie fan, rent it when it comes out on video. Otherwise, give it a
    miss.

    Spoiler notes,

Re the editing: When Whoopie learns that the school will close down,
there is mention of a "pep-rally" she held the night before, but there
    is nothing shown before-hand.

Character development: I kept expecting the James Coburn character to
be revealed as a property developer who wanted to buy up the school to
turn it into the parking lot he spoke about. That, at least, would have
provided a little park of interest to the plot, but that didn't
materialize. Instead, we see surly, unruly kids, turn into well behaved
choir singers in the space of 5 minutes.

Even the performance of most of the same "nuns" from the last movie
seemed a tired cliche (actually, it WAS a tired cliche)

    Again, a big thumb down.

| 415.1 | My take | 32738::L_MOORE | Linda M Moore @TTB | Mon Jan 31 1994 12:14 | 15 |
| | Hi,

I went to see this in the theatre (as opposed to waiting for video)
because a friend wanted to see it. It it predictable? Yes. But I also
found it enjoyable nevertheless. I would recommend waiting for the
video on this one, and willingly suspending your disbelief.

There were some new familiar faces in this movie also- Robert
Pastorelli from Murphy Brown, Michael Jeter from Evening Share and ???
from Beakman's World (the female co-host), and of course Bernard
    Hughes.

This movie also provided a good showcase for some great singers.

    Linda

| 415.2 | I liked it | 38110::TRAVIS | eclat, humaniste, passion | Fri Jun 10 1994 19:39 | 7 |
| | I saw this and even though I thought it might be corny
(somebody had told me he heard it wasn't too good) and there was
one scene with the nuns dancing in front of an audience that I thought
was ridiculous, and despite the cliche story that it is, I liked it.
The story was touching, particularly near the end. If the movie
couldn't be rated as exceptional, then what it represented
    came through very nicely.
