| 396.1 | looking forward to White | 51847::SANDGREN | Keep it simple | Tue Mar 08 1994 09:29 | 14 |
| |
I've modified the title to include these three films in the same topic.

Blue, White and Red are related to the french flag, the Tricolore, the
colors again related to Freedom, Equality and Brothership.

Blue was beautiful! Absolutely astounding! It is related to freedom in
the way that (vaguely expressed, without spoilers) whenever you think
that you have gained freedom in your life, you still haven't got it...

White is coming soon (within few weeks).

| | "Red", is a moody, arty, psychological drama, in French. Pretty ingenue,
older man in stylized, frumpy interior settings. It's about morality,
destiny and friendship. A beautiful film to watch. Very touching.
Recommended highly for the Euro-art-flic crowd. The ending is a gaffe.
See "The Double Life of Veronique". Same director, female lead - sharper edge.

Since these three movies are described as a trilogy, does anyone know how
important to see them in the correct order (if there is one). If there
is an order, what is it? What makes them a trilogy? Same characters?
Same/related themes?
Thanks.

| | Not sure, since I haven't seen "Red" yet, if this is the best order, but the
order of release was Blue, White, Red; the films correspond to the French
motto libert, galit, fraternit, in that order (liberty, equality, fraternity
for you monolingual types).

| | As far as I could tell, the only thing you'd miss noticing by seeing Red
before Blue and White is... (slight spoiler)
a couple of the characters from Blue and White appear in a series of
newsreel shots at the end of Red.

| | I watched them in the order they were released but I can't imagine it
making a difference (I don't remember .6 but it has been a few months
now and it was several months between each film).

While I enjoyed all three, my ranking mirrors their order of release
(Blue was best followed by White) making a case for seeing them in
reverse order... Of course others probably rate them differently.

Does anyone know what film-cycle Kieslowski made, before he did the
    'Trois Couleurs'-cycle?

    Thanks in advance,

| | re: .8, .9

The Decalogue is a series of ten short (less than an hour) films on
each of the ten commandments. The one on Thou Shalt Not Kill received
the most attention but I found them all (the nine I saw anyhow)
interesting. Not to mislead anyone I should say that in some of these
you wouldn't be able to guess which commandment it is about from just
seeing the film - they are about as closely related to each as the
three coulours or liberty, equality and fraternity are in the new
    series.

Really Really enjoyed it until the final scene but was left a little confused at

their interpretations. It's bugging me !!!

| 396.13 | movie blood went red for "Red" | APLVEW::DEBRIAE |  | Mon Mar 06 1995 14:18 | 14 |

I saw "Red" in a packed theatre Saturday night. I must say I was
impressed and loved it, as did most of the audience it seemed. The
French was spoken slowly and pronounciated fully enough that the
movie could also serve as a fun French refresher course as well.
The ingenue was beautiful as well as wonderfully acted. The movie
was sufficiently red for me in both its passion and filming. I'm
intrigued enough to want to see "Blue" and "White" now.
I had heard and read that "Red" was considered the best of the
three, but someone here suggested the reverse, so now I'm even
more excited to see the first two...

| 396.16 | felt "White" was no "Red", a mediocre film | APLVEW::DEBRIAE |  | Mon May 15 1995 11:31 | 18 |
| |
I just saw "White" last night.
It's amazing how people's opinions can vary so greatly. My SO and I
both thought "White" was thoroughly mediocre, and a huge let-down
    	after having seen "Red."
I kept waiting for the movie and storyline to redeem itself, but it
never did. The ending came at a most awkward moment, leaving you to
walk away with a "you've gotta be kidding me" reaction still inside.
The acting was OK. The storyline limp and undramatic. And most
disappointing of all, the characters seems unreal and out of touch.
They and their stories never made an attempt to connect with the
audience, at least it didn't with us.
It wasn't terrible, but not great either. Three stars out of five.

the ending of "red" reminded me of watching 16mm movies in the
navy when the film would break. the projectionist
would splice the film back together when this happened, though,
and we would watch the rest of the film. with "red" you just
hit the rewind button, 'cause it's really over. however, i
thoroughly enjoyed it until it just sort of stopped, so it gets
        3 stars (out of four.)

| | re .3
The order, as has been noted, should be blue, white, red after the
French tri-color. Or, in French: "bleu", "blanc", "rouge". Though we
have the same colors in our flag, the French reverse the order in
describing them. One of those little factoids that one learns when one
lives there. Something to bore your friends with.

Let me say at the outset that I'm not much of a connoisseur of European
art films, and these movies didn't turn me into one. Too bad, because I
    really like Juliette Binoche.

Of the 3, I liked "White" the best. Probably because it has some
story elements that you could put together in your mind and form a plot.
The others have their interesting facets (like the coincidental case of
    judge-candidate + book-falls-open) but they don't GO anywhere.
