Conference bookie::movies

    Well, save for Madonna, none of these people come close to making me
    physically ill, and even Madonna doesn't hold that kind of bad magic
    over me.  If you just want to talk "People in the Movies Who Irritate
    Me", I'll nominate two women who's voices drive me nuts (not in a good
    sense,either):
    
    1. Rosie Perez
    
    2. Melanie Griffith
    
    I am glad I will always have the option of not listening to them speak.

  I find that it really depends more on the character than on the actor. There
are actors who have played parts that I've really liked a lot and then they
have played other characters that I hated intensely.

  For example, the character played by Susan Surandon was great in Bull Durham
but a real turn off in Lorenzo's Oil. Ryan O'Neil nearly made me sick in Love
Story but he was great in Paper Moon. Richard Gear (yes I know I'm spelling
all these names wrong) has done some terrible stuff, but his performance
in "An Officer and a Gentleman" was one of my all time favorites.

  Even Ali McGraw who can usually be trusted to be terrible did a respectable
job in "Good bye Columbus".

  As for the list in .0, most of those have done things that I liked. Even
Madonna was good in "Desperately Seeking Susan".

    Usually I blame "bad performances" on the director or screenwriter, but
    for these cases I'll make exceptions:
    
    1) Michael Douglas.  Confuses virility with swine quotient. Turgid,
    swollen, and sore. Laughable except when he's trying to be funny.  Our
    unfortunate generation's William Shatner.  He'll be modelling girdles
    in a year or two.  Someone skim the scum off the top before it boils
    over.
    
    2) Kim Basinger.  What is the deal here?  Did I miss her awesome
    performance in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED or something?  Avoids paper bags in
    case she has to act her way out.
    
    3) William Holden.  The mainstream '50s ideal of an intellectual:
    puling with a deep voice.  I keep fantasizing him in a version of
    MISERY except with Judy Holliday as the nurse, no special effects, and
    a happy ending.
    
    4) Mickey Mouse.  Somebody kill that effing mouse.
    

    Women:
    
    1.  Melanie Griffith is at the top of my list...
    she has a little girl voice and seems to whine
    through her parts....I bet she has flowery handwriting
    and dots her i's with little hearts!!
    
    2.  Sally Field..too cutesy for words and she's my
    age....don't ask!!
    
    3.  Goldie Hawn....hasn't she ever learned to do anything
    except giggle since Laugh-In
    
    4.  Barbra Streisand....just looks like a phoney baloney..
    I think she overacts in everything she does. Her love scenes
    with Nick Nolte in the Prince of Tides were bad. She looked
    uncomfortable..but I did like the movie and him quite a bit
    
    
    Los Hombres:
    
    1.  Michael Douglas is someone whom I don't understand
    what the fuss is all about....He's always in very acrobatic
    love scenes and he's rather unappealing
    
    2.  Clint Eastwood...yuk...his idea of acting is sneering and
    squinting
    
    3.  Tom Cruise....I think he's nothing special, yet I did
    like him in Born on the Fourth of July...not so much in a
    Few Good Men or Rain Man
    
    4.  Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis..duh, is right!!

    My All-Time Least Favorite Actor:  (even tho he's dead)
    
    John Wayne  -  The sight of this man makes me want to barf my guts out.  
                   In my mind, he stood for everything I consider most 
                   abhorrent about American culture -(he-man individualism
                   taken to a dangerous extreme, war, guns, conservatism,
                   etc.)
    
    
    Current Actors:
    
    1.  John Candy - This man is creepy, and reminds me too much of my idea
                     of a blind date from hell.
    
    2.  John Goodman - I hope this doesn't offend anyone (but I don't
                       imagine there are any obese actors reading this),
                       but, frankly, I don't go to the movies to look at
                       fat men.  (I could do that anywhere, there's so
                       many around.)
    
    3. Danny DiVito  - See both of the above.  (and the penquin suit did
                       nothing for him)
    
    4. Jack Nichols -  I'm sick of him.  There's not enough room in a movie
                       theater for both his ego, and my pleasure (or
                       something like that).
    
    5. Arnold S. (you know the one) - if it was up to me he'd still be working
                       the farm in Austria.  Hate the movies, hate voice,
                       hate the muscles, hate the politics.
    
    6. Chuck Norris - his lame brained machismo makes me sick
    
    7. Sylvester Stallaone - I agree on this one - he comes across as a
                             moron, not very attractive in the age of
                             the sensitive man.
    
    8. Micky Rourke - He comes across as a slimeball and a sleazebag.  He
                      strikes me as the type of guy, that after he had
                      cheated on you, and then dumped you, you'd find out
                      you had caught a social disease from him, and then
                      when you called him to confront him, he'd laugh &
                      hang-up.  (He may be a nice guy, but that's just
                      the way his characters strike me.)  :-)
    
    
    Actresses:
    
    I can only think of one actress, right now, that I really hate, and it
    isn't her fault.  BUT, I still hate her and will never willingly see a
    movie that she is in.
    
    1. Virginia Madsen (or is it Masden??) - One of my ex-boyfriends raved 
                                  about what great breasts she had( in a
                                  movie where she appeared nude), all
                                  during a movie we had rented.  He did
                                  this to hurt me, and he succeeded and 
                                  because of this I can't stand the sight
                                  of her.  (Remarks like, "Oh, jesus, if
                                  I could only get my hands on those",
                                  etc. Nothing like rubbing it in my face
                                  that I'm not a gorgeous movie star -
                                  like *he* is?  Huh!)

    I was so upset at the time that I wasn't paying a lot of attention to

  You got to see early on what a jerk this guy was and you were able to move
on sooner rather than staying around to suffer through what probably would have
been worse later.

I agree that it does depend on the character as much as the actor.  I can
almost think of at least one movie where someone previously mentioned in
this topic was good to excellent.    You also have to take the actor in
context.  You have no business watching a Claude Von Damme movie unless
you are interested in karate/kickboxing films.  I'm not really.  He IS a pretty
bad actor, but some of his movies are good ones for that genre.  

But actors/actress that drive me crazy are:

Jerry Lewis		    For 10 year olds maybe, but to me this man is
			    just not funny.  The fact that the French love
			    this man destroy any credibility they have
			    as a civilized culture.

Mickey O'Rourke		    I hear the man truely does smell.  The French
			    love this guy as well.
 
Katherine Hepburn (TODAY).  A great actress, great movies, but now
			    she seems full of it and her voice effects 
			    me like chalk on a blackboard.

Kim Basinger		    Peaked as an actress in "Batman" 

Sly Stallone 		    Desperate to find something other than Rambo or
			    Rocky to play.

    You mean NicholsON, right Lorna?  I think his earlier work was quite
    good, particularly "Chinatown" and "The Last Detail", but I don't think
    he worked hard enough to earn the salary he pulled down wearing a clown
    mask in "Batman".
    

  I think he did a really good job as the Joker in Batman. He played the part
exactly as I have envisioned it from the time I 1st saw the Joker in the comics
when I was 8 years old.

  Jack often plays the same type of part, but I almost always like the work
he does.

  By the way, Cher once said that the only reason she agreed to do "The Witches
of Eastwick" was that she wanted a chance to work with Jack.

    re .11, yes, I meant Jack Nichol*son*.  He's so famous I can't even
    remember his name!  ha-ha  I liked all his earlier stuff, too, such as
    Five Easy Pieces and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, and I even liked
    him in The Witches of EAstwick.  It's just very recently that he's
    started to bug me.
    
    re .10, thanks for reminding me of Jerry Lewis.  I cannot STAND that
    man.  The most overrated comedian in history, IMO.
    
    Three other actresses I don't really like in movies:
    
    1. Jacqueline Bisset - she bugs me for some reason, very unappealing

    I've got another one for you -- DEAN MARTIN.  My wife says that her
    father used to call him 'Mr. No-Talent'.  What an appropriate
    description.  Whether it was in the movies or on TV, this guy had zilch
    to offer.
    
    Agreement here on Jacqueline Bisset.  Her alleged exotic beauty is
    overrated, and her acting ability is non-existent.

Draft dodging? Wayne was 4F and quite unhappy about it. And while you may
not like his performances I disagree with judging an actors ability by his/her
political beliefs.


I agree that an actor should be judged by an individual performance. While
you may dislike that actor for whatever reason there is at times a role that
just fit his/her weaknesses, making them strengths. A couple of examples:

Madonna: Not much talent there but she was excellent in the part of Breathless
Mahoney in _Dick Tracey_. The part just fit her like a glove.

Barbra Streisand: I avoid her films, something about her just irritates me.
But I thought she was great in _The Way We Were_. No doubt though that she
an extremely talented person.

    Melanie Griffith - the most obnoxious voice in movies! The only movie
    I've *willingly* seen her in was "A Stranger Among Us", not for her but
    for the subject matter.
    
    Mickey Rourke - have loathed him since "Diner". I don't know what type 
    of a person he is, but the type of role he always plays, and his
    reported support of the IRA make me sick.
    
    Ray Liotta - his looks make me gag.

    has anyone mentioned Bruce Willis?  Except for his uncharacteristic
    role in "Death Becomes Her" (in which he was merely tolerable),

Kim Basinger had a spread in Playboy many years ago, which helped make her a big 
sex symbol.   It's funny, because for me anyway, while she seems to have the
looks and the figure, I don't find her sexy at all.

    I'm surprised that so many people seem to dislike Melanie Griffith. 
    Personally, I think she's adorable.  If I were a guy I think I'd
    consider her to be a pretty hot number.  :-)  I even like her voice. 
    Maybe I'm nuts, but I think it's sexy.  I wouldn't mind looking and
    sounding like her.  Or, at least I had *thought* I wouldn't mind
    looking and sounding like her, but after reading some of the comments
    in here, maybe I should consider myself lucky that I don't!  :-)
    (I think she has a *great* smile.)
    
    Also, Kim Basinger doesn't bother me.  I don't consider her to be an
    especially good actress, but she seems competent enough in comedies,
    and I think her face is absolutely gorgeous.  I think she's definitely
    one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.  Her cheekbones, her
    hair, her mouth and eyes are exquisite, IMO.  (And she dates (lives
    with?) that gorgeous hunk Alec Baldwin, who also happens to be a good
    actor.)
    
    I think Ray Liotta has very nice eyes, and is sort've attractive, even
    though he has played some pretty scummy characters in some movies, such
    as Something Wild (as Melanie Griffith's ex!), and Goodfellas.

    lost his regular Joe persona and has just become whiny and
    annoying.  The only two roles this worked for him were "China

       what you [probably] think.  A vomitorium is a ramp in a stadium
       that leads from the seats to the outside of the stadium -- the
       word was used to describe the Roman-era forums, when, at the end
       of events held there, the stadia would `vomit' the attendees from

    I think Hollywood Vomitorium has more of a ring to it, and since you're

    have some covering your forehead but not hanging in your eyes, those
    are known as bangs in American English.
    
    Pointy or spikey bangs are what you call the kind of bangs Liza Minelli
    is famous for wearing--they point or spike out instead of lying
    smoothly like a curtain across her forehead...

    re .71, I just rented "In Country" where Bruce Willis plays an
    alienated blue-collar Vietnam vet, and I thought he did a good job.  I,
    also, thought he did a good job as the abusive husband in "Mortal

    I don't like his more typical action movie roles, but then I don't
    usually like that type of movie, anyway.
    
    At any rate, I think he makes a much more convincing loser than hero.

	I saw the one with the Vietnam vet, let's say it was OK - but
	to me, he is not convincing. And the amount of tasteless,
	stupid movies he has participated in has damaged his name, IMO.

	Recently, I was on a bus travel, where I more or less was forced
	to look at a video (the TV monitor was right in front of my
	face) with BW playing the usual dumb, annoying action-character
	with stupid lines all the time, I think the title was 'The Last
	Scout' or something. What was even more annoying (and this was
	not BW's fault, of course), was that there were several kids in
	the bus, being witnessies to meaningless, stupid violence in
	overall dumb, brutal, typical BW film.

	Enough said!

    What? No mention of the pig of all pigs - Roseanne. Fat, loud, ugly and
    an obnoxious voice who admits to once being a prostitute in her bio.

    Do not understand the "hate" notes against Liza Minneli. Thought she
    was excellent in Cabaret.
    
    Barbara Streisand. Must be doing something right as she has won every
    award in show business. Should have got the Academy Award for Best
    Director for Prince of Tides.
    
    Pierce Brosnan. What a zero personality. Hated him in Mrs. Doubtfire.
    Can he do anything but raise his eyebrows for emotion as though he just

    I just heard that everybody's favorite vampire, Tom Cruise, has been
    cast as [are you ready?] _Zorro_, for an upcoming remake.

There was e remark made a while back about Charleton Heston's lack of acting
talent, well I don't know if anyone saw him On Saturday Night Live about a year
ago but I don't think I've ever seen anyone bomb as bad as he did. There was
obviously NO talent there. (Even if he's no comedian.)

    I saw him on SNL and I was appalled at how bad he was.  I kept wanting
    to believe he was doing a parody of himself.
    

    I thought the skit he did in the grocery store was funny.

    Which is interesting, because in one of the Bill & Ted movies (or
    possibly a Wayne & Garth), they had this scene with a "bad" actor and 
    called in a "good" actor -- Charlton Heston -- to start over.

    Cut him some slack he's like 70 years old. Besides, when was the last
    time there was anything funny on SNL? :)

RE Charlton Heston

  I agree that the grocery skit on SNL was really good. He did a fine job.
He was also funny as the spoksman for the NRA. Two good skits is a lot for
SNL.

RE  Liza Minneli and Barbara Streisand. 

  You either love Broadway musicals or you don't. If you do, you'll love these
two who can step out in front of a big production cast and belt out a tune that
will rock them in their seats. But if that's all just noise to your ears, then
most of their work comes across as irritating.

  I've never really seen Liza Minneli do anything that I felt was impressive.
As for Streisand, her movies are cute and she's got a great voice but her music
selection is terrible. She could have been an opera star but she chickened out.

Actually, she was kicked out of the choral club in high school because the
chairman of the music department told her she couldn't sing! (Actually she has a
very individualistic style and probably didn't fit in well in the chorus). This
is a true story - I went to the same high school a few years after her.  When I
was there, she was just starting to make it big.  Every year in the program for
the spring concert she took out a full page ad  with just her name on it.  We
were never quite sure whether she did it to be nice because she was an alumnus
of the school or if it was her way of saying to the music chairman - "you told
me I couldn't sing - well look at me now!"
