  I really enjoyed the movie but, I thought Maria Tomei's (sp) was more of
a twenty something waitress who is unsuccessful  in life and love and finds
love from an unexpected source.  Rosie Perez (Woody Harrelsons girl friend in
White Men can't Jump) is effective as the fellow worker, but Christian Slater
makes the movie. Christian plays a busboy in the  dinner Tomei's character 
works in. He has been raised by Nuns in an orphanage, and has little social
skills, since his heart problem, caused him to be isolated because of risk 
of infection. Maria's character barely notices Slater, until she is attacked
by two rapists on the way home from work. The development of the friendship 
and then love between the Tomei and Slater characters is very well done, sad,
poignot (sp) but uplifting.

 FYI
  Marisa Tomei was just nominated for best supporting actress in My Cousin 
Vinny. I hadn't recognized her, talk about two character portrayals, 180
degrees apart.

    Best acting I ever saw from Christian Slater.  He was sensational
    as the incredibly shy busboy.  But as good as he was, Marisa Tomei was 
    even better!!!  While Slater's shyness was eventually flushed out, it
    seemed as weird to the moviegoer as it did to the waitresses at the
    diner (although I loved Perez' character's "I'd do him" comment!).
    Tomei was immediately believable as the sweet girl who somehow always
    came up a loser in love.
    
    This is not a long movie (just over an hour and a half), but I liked
    the minimalist style.  You weren't encumbered by peripheral stories
    about other members of her family or people at the diner.  The
    screenplay left the movie up to Slater and Tomei to carry it, and they
    pulled it off flawlessly.

    It was a sweet movie.  Something my boyfriend would skip over, but my
    daughter and I really enjoyed it.

       The players were good, but the plot and writing were  dumb and
       predictable.  Rosie Perez was great -- she reminded me of Marisa
       Tomei's performance in `My Cousin Vinny'.  Tomei was also
       terrific, even nailing the Minnesota accent.
       
       Everything that happened in the movie was telegraphed, in bold
       type, long before it took place.  Rating: feh.

	I rented this one only knowing the actors in it and not
	knowing anything about the movie itself.  I was VERY
	pleasently surprised!  Well acted as has been mentioned
	and a decent story line for the most part.

	What also made this film but could of hurt it also .....

	Was having the male lead die at the end.  Ie. not a HAPPY ending.

I recently rented this as well and my daughter and I liked it, but needed a box
of kleenex!  :-)
I thought Christian Slaters performance was excellent and thought Merisa  Tomei
was so believable.  

I also recently rented this movie and thought it was great! As previously
mentioned, sort of predictable storyline, but it's pulled off because of
the fine acting job of the principles.

    I thought Tomei was outstanding in this and I even am starting to like
    Slater more and more.  i really enjoyed this move.  It's not filled
    with action by any means but it was a nice story.  Definately worth the
    rental.  (keep the Kleenex close by)
    
    

    Gee, I should have read these before renting, I hadn't realized it
    was a tearjerker.  But I enjoyed it very much, it was  a sweet
    character study, and I agree that the acting of the three main
    stars was great.  Note that after her Oscar-winning Brooklyn
    accent, Tomei did a very creditable Midwestern (Minneapolis)
    accent in this.  It made me appreciate this and her other performances
    even more (I also rented "Chaplin" in which she has a couple
    scenes as silent film star Mabel Normand--don't blink or you'll
    miss her!)

    I rented this over the holidays and loved it!  Marisa & Christian 
    certainly gave it their best.  I recognized Marisa from the movie
    "My Cousin Vinny" and look forward to seing her in future movies.
    
    As it was New Years Eve, I got to keep the movie over two nights;
    so I passed it to my mom - she also enjoyed it.
    
    Thumbs up (all four) for this one!

    Hi, 
    	I remember seeing the trailer for this film when I rented some
    video years ago. I really liked the song that was playing with the
    trailer. Does anyone out there know what it was called and the singer.
    It is a slowish song and the singer goes "dum, dum, dum, dum, " alot.
    Not much help I know.

    this was on tv last night (4/1/96). Liked it, but definately a 2
    hankie!
    
    after it was over, a thought rumbling around - I bet she has her
    step-dad fix the window in the basement!
    
    1.5 hrs - no wonder there were lots of commercials!
    
    Also, the opening song, piano instrumental, any idea is that was an
    original for the movie? Credits were smushed into the corner of the
    screen (I HATE that they are doing that!) and the movie guide I use on
    the Internet lists the songs, but doesn't indicate which is the title
    song. I really liked the opening piece. My guess it's the one piece
    written by cliff owens. but would like to know.

    Not sure whether it was the opening music also, but the "magic record"
    song he played for her, and which was also played at the end of the
    movie, was "Nature Boy".  This song, with words, was originally done by
    Nat King Cole.
    
    The words are something like this:
    
    There was a boy
    A very strange enchanted boy
    
    (and of course I can't remember anything else!)
