This coming Saturday is the auction in the basenote here.
I recommend you check it out for some amazing bargains for
quality birds and supplies. Handfed young cockatiels, for
instance, went for $25-45 at the last auction. Gorgeous handfed
baby parakeets, both American and English, went for $5-15 each,
and handfed 'keets and 'tiels are really some of the best bargains
as a first time pet for your family. Some Amazon parrots with cages
went for under $200, etc. I know that at this Saturday's auction,
there will be a lot of used good cages for sale, based on promises
made at the last club meeting.
We never know exactly what birds will be brought until the morning of
the auction, but there are typically some finches, doves, canaries, and
lovebirds available, as well as parent-raised and handfed baby 'keets
and 'tiels. Sometimes breeder pairs of birds are seen there as well.
Some surprises always happen, like a beautiful bronze-winged pionus one
time, a great-billed parrot another time, a Major Mitchell's (Leadbeater's)
cockatoo, and so on......
The atmosphere is casual, with refreshments available. Lots of
children are usually there with their families. People bringing birds
are required to be sure their birds have food and water during the
auction. Also, the club is careful to be sure there is a balance between
opportunities for interested parties to view the birds and other items up
close, then times for the birds to be undisturbed while bidding is going
on. Cardboard carriers for transporting your bird(s) home are available
at a nominal charge. Vendors will also be there selling bird toys and
other supplies.
Birds of a Feather club is a non-profit group trying to raise money
to sponsor the National Cage Bird Show this November in Manchester,
New Hampshire. The club is also based out of Manchester. The public
is welcome at any of the meetings without having to join or pay a
per visit fee of any kind. Each meeting features a raffle table with
interesting bird-related items and some educational demo or a speaker
who is an expert in his or her field. You don't even need to own a
bird to enjoy the club and its activities! Questions are always
welcome. You are guaranteed to find answers and help from among
the club's membership.
