Can anyone help me out with a de-feathering parakeet? My friend has a
blue male parakeet about 5 years old that is just starting to lose all
of his feathers around his chest (crop area) and down to his feet.
Neighboring the parakeet's cage is another cage that has a tiel in it.
Now, the tiel is not losing any of his feathers so we don't think it is
mites. I told my friend that the Littleton Animal Hospital is a
wonderful place to bring her bird.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might help the bird or
better yet - help diagnose the problem.
Thanks in advance!

MArk,
There is a good chance the Budgie, plucked itself which could be for a
variety of reasons. The best bet is for your freind to write down any
changes that have happened in the Budgies enviroment in the last couple
of months, Food, daylight, location of cage, temperature, activity
around his cage. She should also check his Cere and legs to see if they
appear abnormal, as it could be parasites. Also if there has been a
change in droppings.
Ideally the best thing is for her to take the budgie to the VET, as you
suggested.
You can also read notes 253, 721 and 557 on this subject.
