Hi,
Each year I use my tax refund to buy myself something that I
really want. This year, if my roommate doesn't object, I hope
to purchase a bird.
I'm very used to parakeets and canaries as we had them when I
was growing up. My fave was our last parakeet. She used to
sit on my glasses and eat whatever I ate.
What I'm looking for are some suggestions as to what would be
a good bird for someone who has only had parakeets. None since
1972. I was thinking either 2 parakeets (so they could keep each
other company while I was at work) or something the size of a
cockatiel or lovebird.
Parrots are definitely not being considered.
I really miss having a bird around. They are such fun. As the
bird will be in my room and I don't go out much, it will get lots
of attention.
Second question, what do you do with your friends when you go on
vacation? That is the only part that bothers me.

Linda,
I would suggest another parakeet (preferably a baby which can easily
be tamed), or a handfed cockatiel. Either of these birds make
wonderful companions and a joy to have around. I would suggest that
you get one bird at a time so that you can spend time with it and
it will bond to you. Otherwise you will never get close to it
since it will spend most of its time with its friend.
I have a couple of handfed cockatiels that I take out each night who
currently live in the same cage (both males). They weren't raised
together and have never bonded since they were full adults when
they were put together. This works well and I can take them out
each night and play with them and they both vie for my attention.
The younger one (under 1 year) follows the older one (12 yrs.)
around alot, but the older one hardly acknowledges him so he looks
to me for affection. The older one just thinks he's a person.
They are really cute.
Budgies can be as cute and loveable if you get them when they are
about 6-7 weeks old (By the way, I have some cute babies that are
only about 2wks old that will need homes in about 5 weeks if you
are interested. They are pieds, mostly yellow w/some black or
pure yellow. I will also probably have a blue pied, since she
had 3 blue pieds in the last clutch. Blue pieds are mostly blue
with white and a little black. The wings are almost all white.)
My only concern is that they have good loving homes.
I would stay away from lovebirds, for they are quite noisy most
of the time. I have a couple of pair. Unless you get a handfed
baby, but even then, they are still loud.
Best of luck in whatever you choose, and let us know what you decide
on and keep us updated!
Regards,
Denise

Thanks for the suggestions. Since I'm used to 'keets, I may just
stay with them.
It all depends on my roommate since it's her house. I really miss
having a bird around.

Oh well, best laid plans and all that. Turns out Margaret, my
landlord/roommate is allergic to birds. Looks like I have to
find a new place to live. One where I can have a bird or two,
or whatever.
