| | MaryAnne,

My mother-in-law had a rosella and the last thing you could call
it was very quiet. Her Rosella was a beak that would not quit.
that bird would mimic just about anything, here comes the bride,
happy birthday, and lot's more but her Rosell was not tame
She sure was pretty, I did love her colors.
I have a Pet Bird book at home and there were two kinds of Rosella's
one had a blue base and the other had a red base I will look up
    the names and write back.

I believe the red coloured Rosella is called a Stanley Rosella. I've
heard that the handfeds are sweet but inclined to chatter.

    Donna,

You've mentioned your mother-in-laws Rosellas a few time so I hope you
won't mind my questions. I am interested in getting one but having a
very hard time finding information on them, specifically concerning
price. Do you know what a ball park price would be for a Rosella?

    Thanks,

    Jeanne

| | Jeanne,

I do believe that Rosellas are around 175.00 to 200.00 I don't know
if that is hand fed or not. From what I have heard at the bird shows
they make lovely pets but like the mustache parakeets they need to
be handled alot or they revert back into unfriendly birds, but we
also know that each bird is different. I do know for a fact that
they have a talent for mimicking.

    Good Luck!
    Donna

| | The price mentioned in -.1 note is about what they go for around here
in New England, but if it is a handfed, then add maybe as much as
another $100, especially if you are buying from a retail pet store.
The handfeds are worth it if you want a bird that is not afraid of
you and is less likely to nip. If you will be keeping the bird in
a cage most of the time and working on teaching it to talk, you
might be wasting the extra money on a handfed. You can usually do
better with a young bird (either domestic handfed or imported), if
talking is your goal. Either the domestic or imported may learn
to talk, but with imports sometimes you get an older bird that will
take more time and patience. Remember that even bird species famous
for mimickry have individual birds that break that rule and never
learn to talk, despite intense and faithful efforts on the part of
    owners.

Cockatiels are usually very gentle birds. Anybody out there know
if a rosella added to make a trio will cause trouble? All I can
think of is that the pair of cockatiels, if bonded, will not mix
well with the newcomer. Opinions? Experiences?

This type of rosella may be the one called "Pennant or Crimson
Rosella" wich is the one that has the most red, all others have
red but other colors dominate, like the Golden Rosella wich is
the prettyer in my opinion. I have a book called "Simon & Schuster's"
guide to Pet Birds by Matthew M. Vriends, this book has info on over
200 species, i recoment it. Please forgive me for butting in but i
like Rosellas, but un able to get one down here in Puerto Rico!!!.

If some can get some info were one can call, like any breather please
reply here so that some of use that are in the works on getting on can
    reach and touch one...

                                      Thankx in advance.
