Looks like I'm going to loose one of my Finches, The White Headed
Nun. We woke up this morning and he was lying on the bottom of
the cage. I immediately put him and his mate in a small cage with
a heating pad and cover. I called my vet and explained that his
droppings are very yellow (not flourecent) just a rich yellow.
I explained that he is pretty listless but gets percky occasionally.
My vet proceeded to explain that it is very common in finches to
experience liver failure. She feels this is probably the case because
of the yellow droppings. We are giving him some anti-biotics, but
my vet wasn't real hopefull this will work. Any body else had this
problem? Did your finches pull through or not? I feel real bad
for the mate to this guy. When I first pulled him out of the flight,
she started to get real noisy over him being gone, so I put them
both together and they both perked up. I'm sad... it looks as though
there isn't much hope. I have had both birds for about a year now
and haven't brought any new birds in recently without a 45 day
quaranteen so I don't think he is dying because of some recently
caught diseas, however, if he does pass on, I will have a full
autopsy done to make sure. It's just sorta ruined my whole day.

Sorry! I don't think there's anything more devastating than finding
a pet on the bottom of the cage.

My finch is 100% BETTER! Can you believe it. He is percky, has
nice tight feathers again and big round eyes. He is eating like
crazy. I believe he is saved! One of my Cordon's got a little
sick too but is now all percked up again. The only thing now that
I can think of is wood stain fumes. I know.. talking about bird
dangers and her I am exposing my birds to wood stain, but we stained
in the garage and the birds are several rooms away. The Finches
seemed to be the only ones affected if this is what it was. My
vet seems to think that its possible because their small size makes
them more suseptable however we couldn't smell the fumes at all
in the house and didn't do very much staining at that. We had the
garage doors open, so there was plenty of ventilation but I guess
even trace amounts can affect the little guys. We took some fecal
samples in and the vet says they look good, no signs of any real
infection. I can't believe that stain could cause this since we
where so careful to not let any in the house but.... All the rest
of my birds are fine, including the Canaries which aren't a whole
lot bigger. This is weirod.. but I'll tell you, I'll be staining
in the street next time if at all again! Actually I hope this is
what it is, or else I have something else going on, however none
of the other birds got sick and all the finches are doing fine now.
I did move them upstairs to quaranteen the whole lot of them and
keep them warm and also put antibiotics in their water so I'm keeping
my fingers crossed!
