I was wondering if any of you give your birds Iron Supplements?

When I bought my Grey, the owner had a powder that was an Iron
supplement that was given once a week. You just sprinkle it over
her food. She told me that Greys are known for iron deficiency
and suggested that I keep her on it until she was over a year old.

Are any of you aware of this? Are there Grey owners out there that
    do not use Iron Supplements?

I would think that if you feed a balanced diet you wouldn't need
    to do this.

    What do you think?

    Thanks,

    Mark

| Hi Mark,

I was using AVAMIN (sp?) in my Grey's water for a few months. This
is a liquid mineral supplement. I was told by my vet that SUPER PREEN
has both the vitamins and minerals in it combined together and that
my grey should be getting approximately an 1/8th of a teaspoon a
day to be complete in his vitamin and mineral needs. I know this
has Iron in it so apparently this is sufficient for him.

| I also read in Bird Talk in a couple of different issues, that Greys
are PARTICULARLY susceptible to calcium deficiency.

| I went to the vets office today. It's down the street from where
I work and I had to pick up some Topper Diet. Dr. Kilgore was there
and I asked her. She said that Iron was not a problem but Calcium
was. What I'm giving her is Necton MSA and Dr. Kilgore said that
    was fine.
