Conference 7.286::multia

    I am attempting to install RAS onto my V3.2 Intel Multia.
    I pointed the dialouge at \V032\FILES\DRIVERS as per .5
    
    It responds by asking me to insert the disk labeled 
    "Windows NT Workstation CD-ROM or Setup Disk #6" into E:
    
    I do not have either; I thought the Multia Admin CD-ROM 
    had all the NT bits on it. What am I doing wrong?

    It appears as though some bit of NT code is being to smart for it's own
    good. After trying a number of differant things, it seems that when you
    point to a locally attached cdrom drive, it checks the disk label and
    assumes you have inserted the wrong cdrom, hence prompting you to put
    in the NT distribution. If I copy the contents of \v032\files\drivers
    off the cd to a directory on the hard disk, and point at _that_, the
    RAS install finds everything it wants and completes with no errors.

    Does anyone know off-hand if the files in \v032\files\drivers are the
    "original" NT 3.51 version, or do they include the SP4 updated drivers?

    I would "assume" it is 3.51 as the SP4 patch gets installed during the
    software rebuild...

    All this 'new-fangled' stuff better yeild one hell of a productivity
    boost, considering the time and effort I've spent on it...
    
    Well, I've got RAS installed, and I went through the various config
    steps; as far as I can tell I did everything right (it would really be
    helpful if the WNT online docs were included on the cdrom). However, 
    when I dial my local office modem pool and try to start PPP, the 
    Multia hangs up the line and displays an error 720 panel.
    
    After poking around, it seems that there are no bindings for TCP/IP,
    even though all the TCP/IP software has been installed.
    
    After further poking around, if I tell 'Customize this desktop' to
    enable TCP/IP, then when it's finished I now have bindings for both 
    RAS and the Ethernet. Great, except I don't want or need TCP/IP on 
    the Ethernet. The only thing connected to the Ethernet is a VS3100, 
    and thus I enabled DECnet and LAT (and NetBEUI because the Multia 
    didn't seem to like it when all I had was Decnet and Lat enabled,
    and in case I decide to install Pathworks on the VS3100 later).
    
    To me, what I'm trying to do seems fairly simple; DECnet and LAT to
    the workstation on the Ethernet, dial-up TCPIP to the office. No WINS,
    no DHCP, no IPX, no PAP, no CHAP, no NetBEUI, no NWLink, no SNMP, just 
    plain old TCPIP via PPP dialup into a DS700. (Note: I have successfully
    used this same dialup pool under both Win95 and MacOS without problems.)
    
    Can someone tell me what 'Customize this desktop' does when you don't
    have TCP/IP enabled that prevents the WNT Network control panel from
    creating the appropriate bindings between RAS and TCP/IP, even though 
    all the Microsoft TCP/IP software has been installed?

    Does it rename some file or twiddle some registry flag, and thus 
    inhibit the network control panel from binding TCP/IP and RAS?

	Yes it modifies the registry so that
TCP/IP does not bind.  You can do what you want
to do but not when you use the Multia config. mgr
since it will disable TCP/IP for all interfaces.
You must enable TCP/IP and then manually use the
control panel to enable and disable the bindings.

    Hmmm... Only problem with disabling bindings is that it's not clear 
    to me which ones to hit. I've tried what you suggest, and I'm now
    getting some startup errors in the event log as a result.
    
    Off-hand, do you know/remember what registry items are twiddled?
