| | Why are they packing it in? Lack of funds, sponsorship?

It is sad to see them go. They have been one of the mainstays for
    quite some time.

From what I heard is Motorcraft reduced their sponsorship
from a major sponsor to an associate sponsorship...save money?
I also heard that Oswald has signed on with the "Over The Hill
Gang"...they are going to have two cars, one based on the west coast
and one based on the east coast to cut down on travel expenses..
I'm going to miss seeing the Candies and Hughes cars, they were always
    a class act....

| 106.9 | Gatornationals... | WFOV11::DOBOSZ_M |  | Sat Mar 16 1991 07:12 | 48 |
| | GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UPI) -- Track records were established Friday in
all three professional categories during the second day of qualifying
for the 22nd annual Motorcraft Quality Parts Gatornationals at
Gainesville Raceway.
Eddie Hill, Jim White and Darrell Alderman led the record assault to
emerge as the qualifying leaders for the $1,215,600 NHRA Winston Drag
Racing Series event, the fourth stop in the 18-race series.
Hill, 55, of Wichita Falls, Texas, is the Top Fuel leader as he
covered the quarter-mile distance in a track-record elapsed time of 4.
920 seconds at 281.69 mph in his Pennzoil/Super Shops dragster.
It's the same car Hill used to post drag racing's first sub-five
second run in 1988 when he ran 4.990. It also carried him to his first
career victory at the 1988 Gatornationals. Friday's effort was also
Hill's career best elapsed time.
Defending Winston champion Joe Amato, of Old Forge, Pa., is second at
4.943 and 279.24.
White, of Tusa, Okla., leads the Funny Car field after a track-record
time of 5.171 at 279.93 in Roland Leong's Hawaiian Punch Dodge Daytona.
John Force, of Yorba Linda, Calif., is second at 5.280 and 259.36.
Alderman, of Lexington, Ky., continued the record-setting pace with a
7.188 at 190.63 in his Mopar Dodge Daytona to lead Pro Stock.
Alderman has been a winner in the first three events this season in
quest of a second consecutive Pro Stock championship. The qualifying
effort also erases the bitter memory of last year's event when he failed
to qualify.
Warren Johnson, of Duluth, Ga., is second at 7.206 and 190.96, a
track-record speed.
All three competitors say the national record is within their grasp
during the weekend.
Darrell Gwynn has the Top Fuel record at 4.909. White's 5.140 is the
record in Funny Car and Alderman holds the mark of 7.184 in Pro Stock.
``The car was good enough to set the national record but the front
end was up in the air off the line and came down a little out of the
groove,'' Alderman said. ``If the conditions stay the same, the national
record could definitely be lowered.''
	White agreed.
``The way the car is running, we could break our record,'' White
said. ``We certainly have the horsepower and chassis setup to get down
this track.''
Hill is elated with his decision to park his 1991 car in favor of a
three-year-old machine.
``I just feel comfortable with this car and the crew is confident it
has a setup that works consistently,'' Hill said. ``Maybe it's mental.
Whatever, it works.''
Hill is looking for his fourth consecutive trip to the finals of the
Gatornationals.
Qualifying continues Saturday with two rounds scheduled. Final
eliminations are Sunday.

| 106.10 | Results and Buckles please | JUNO::JUPP |  | Fri Mar 29 1991 06:23 | 37 |
| | Hi Guys,

It;s really great to see the qualifying times from the Gators, as it is
the only "real" Drag race I have attended (1988). Mr Hill set low ET of
    the meet @5.06.

As you guys can imagine, it's a bit expensive for me to attend these
races as I live in England (UK not New).

I would greatly appreciate it, if somebody could post the results of
the national events in the notes file, as it takes 6 weeks for national
dragster to reach us over here.

In '88 when I turned up on the Thursday just to have a look round, the
first person I bumped into was Frank Bradley. I carried on walking
straight through the gate (no ticket) into the pits and the first car I
saw was Bob Glidden (my hero). To say I was speechless would be an
understatement. He was just driving the race car round the pits as if
he was going to go out for the shopping.

The race was awesome, the only problem I had was with the sun. The new
aluminium bleachers had just been built, and they reflected the sun
just like a mirror. I was really pleased when the Friday session was
washed out. My sun burn was giving me hell. It did however give us a
chance to catch up with our Ol' mate Dave Fletcher who was crewing for
    Billy Meyer at the time.

Another thing while I'm here, does anybody out there have any NHRA belt
buckles. I have been lucky enough to be given a 1982 one by a friend,
and I won a 1976 one in a raffle. I am interested in expanding this
collection, also can anybody tell me when the NHRA started making these
buckles and when they stopped, as I am lead to believe that they are
    not made anymore.

    Keep on Dragin

    Ian...

defeated defending series champion John Force. White had a
time of 5.595 at 271.90 mph in a Dodge Daytona to defeat
Force who smoked the tires at the start and settled for a

Alderman missed the first three qualifying sessions and had

won the finals in 7.204 seconds, a track record, at 190.07

I have heard from my friends that Keith Black has died as well.
and Mr Donovan died last year, and I have just read that JP has gone,
who is going to take over from these extrodinary fellows?

Maybe the NHRA should allow other inovators such as the McGee Bros
to build engines that are allowed to be used for sanctioned events.

I also heard a rumour that Darrell Gwynn is going to drive again, is
    this correct?

Would it be possible for somebody to put in the current point standings
and result table. It was really useful when this was being added on a
    regular basis last year.

The NHRA hotline described this past weekends US Nats as highly
emotional with the race dedicated to Gary Ormsby who recently
passed away, and with the *outstanding* performance of the Castrol
dragster in the hands of Pat Austin.

    TF

Bernstein won the race, smoking his tires in the final round. He would
have raced Austin but the Castrol dragster's blower backfired on the
burnout. Previous to that Austin had the best reaction times and ETs
of the event. This after having only just aquired the team from the
recently deceased Ormsby. Austin won Alcohol Funny Car in his familiar
Oldsmobile ride. BTW, Pat's dad is developing an "Oldsmobile" nitro
engine. The Austin family looks ready to really shake up pro racing.

    FC

Jim White (5.27/283) defeated John Force (5.33) White collected the
$50K Big Bud Shootout victory as well. A terrific weekend for them.

    PS

Darrel Alderman (7.29/188) defeated Larry Morgan (7.30). Alderman
very nearly has the Pro Stock championship sewn up.

Castrol/Oldsmobile sponsored cars made the final in all the pro
catagories but failed to collect a win.

    TAFC - Austin
    TAD - Johnson
Comp - Nickens (another Castrol Olds)

Bernards won both the Pro Stock Motorcycle final and the Wax Shop Shoootout.

Sorry, I don't have the rest of the sportsmen results.

    - Nate

| | I think I read this in yesterday's paper but Darrell Alderman pleaded
guilty to some of the cocaine distribution and conspiracy to distribute
charges and has been suspended by the NHRA. Pretty good lawyer to keep him
free during the season so he could make the $$$ before NHRA could do
anything about it.
