In the winter of 1989, Manfred Moehring was gearing up for his first
year with the Sports Car Club of America. As he was getting his Porsche
911 ready for the GT-2 Class, his 3 year old daughter Danielle was
becoming increasingly ill with fevers and leg pain. In May of 1989 she
was dignosed with leukemia. Nothing is more devastating than seeing
your omly child hurting. Feeling so helpless standing by her hospital
bed while she is poked, stuck, prodded and medicated with chemo pouring
through her veins killing cancer cells and making her very weak and
deathly pale. Nothing is more important than making her well again.
    To run, laugh and play.
Many people were very supportive during this time. The COM Sports
Car Club, the Indoor Model Racing Association and Yankee Sports Car Club
raised money for Danielle. The Moehrings felt that this money should be
used for leukemia research and bone marrow donor recruiting. Danielle is
currently being treated at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center
in Worcester, MA and Boston Childrens Hospital.
During the winter of 1990, Team Yankee and Polar Racing, made up of
SCCA New England Region IT-B driver Ed Funk, IT-A drivers Ed Warkulewicz
and Eric Strobel, AMA motorcycle racer John Crowley and Manfred, formed
Racing Against Leukemia to benefit childhood leukemia research at UMASS
Medical Center. Leukemia research has come a long way in 15 years. Then
it was a death sentence, but now it can be treated and many children can
be cured. But doctors don't know why some children do well and others
don't make it. In Danielle's case she won't be declared "cured" until
she stays in remission beyond the age of 10 years old. Families of these
children live day by day. Some children's only hope is a bone marrow
transplant. Chances for a direct match are 1 in 20,000. Unlike blood
types, there are many bone marrow types. Most bone marrow matches are
within the recipients own ethnic origin. So as varied ethnic groups
make up our country, so must the list of potential donors. The national
goal for the donor bank is 1 million, 800,000 potential donors are being
sought which requires a simple but expensive blood test. We urge
everyone reading this letter to participate in local bone marrow donor
drives. If your bone marrow does match someone who needs a transplant,
please realize that it is nothing like an organ transplant. your body
is constantly making bone marrow and will replace what is being removed.
It does not require an operation or incision. Liquid bone marrow is
removed through a syringe and in most cases done with local anesthesia.
Racing Against Leukemia and Team Yankee would like to solicit your
donations and/or pledges based on racing laps completed during the 1990
    racing season.
Donation checks made out to "UMASS Pediatric Oncology" will go
strictly to childhood leukemia research conducted by the three pediatric
    oncologists.
Donation checks made out to "Caitlin Raymond International Registry"
will be used for blood testing bone marrow donors.
Donations or requests for information can be mailed to:

| | Ladies and gentlemen,
Our club has decided that the auction will be run similar to a Chinese
Auction where you are given a ticket price for each item. One or more
tickets may be purchased for the item and placed in the box for that
item. At the end of the auction, a ticket will be drawn from each box
and the person holding the other half of the ticket wins the bid for
that item. For example, on an item valued at $300 and selling for a
ticket price of $10, you place one or more of your $10 tickets in the
box for that item. If your number is drawn, you get that item. This
type of auction is also known as a penny sale.
To give you an idea of what kind of items you could donate, here is a
list of some of the items that the club has received so far:
	Item Value Ticket
	--------------------------------	----- ------
	cases of potato chips $ 15 $ 1
	ski area lift tickets $ 50 $ 2
	gift certificates for shoes $100 $ 5
	autographed t-shirt $ 40 $ 2
	Hi-Temp brake fluid $ 12 $ 1
	bike helmet $ 40 $ 2
	gift certificates for tires $ 25 $ 1
	chalet accomadations $300 $10
	gift certificates for dinner $ 50 $ 2
Other possible items include ski equipments, suntan time, haircuts, and
    tickets to movies or shows.
You don't even have to donate anything yourself, just bring and show the
above letters to the business establishment where you go for a hair cut,
skiing, shopping or dining. Or, show up at our auction and buy lots of
    tickets. :-)
Note that the auction will be held on January 5, 1991, at the Best Western
Plaza Hotel in Marlboro, Ma., so the donations should be in at least a
couple of days before that, but please get them in early so that they can
    get onto the item list.
