Hi Jan,
Just a guess since I don't have a baby book, but it might be a
variation on Laura. I think Lara would be on the list of variations
as well. Sorry I can't help with the meaning.

IARA is a Brazilian name. It belongs to our Indian Folklore(a dialect
called Tupiguarani). Iara means "the mother of the waters".
