| | I have some Chineese friends who chose American names when they
came to the states so people here could pronounce them. I'm glad
you're helping your niece because they ended up with Montana Lui
    and Napolean Lui.
Another friend whose last name is Lee chose Tony. I think that's
    nice: Tony Lee.

| | I have friends and relatives (Chinese) who let the doctor pick names
and ended up with names including Lancelot and Winston. Others picked
their own names and chose Mas (he thought it was a nickname for Thomas)
and Edith (not only old fashioned but the lady pronounced it Edif)!

| | I think just about anything goes with Li except, of course,
names like Julie, Emily, etc. for obvious reasons. Do you know
if they plan on given their child a middle name? If so, I think
it would be nice to give a Chinese name as a middle name and use
an American name for a first name if they wish. I have a Chinese
friend whose parents named him and his sisters this way.
Now I don't know any Chinese names, but for American names
    how about:

Girls - Allyson (my personal fave, because it's my daughter's
name, but then we call her Ally and that wouldn't
                     go with Li)
            Amanda
            Amy
            Hannah

    Boys - Benjamin
Gary (or even Gray - I know a guy named Gray and I think
it's a very unusual, interesting name)
Jesse (another old favorite, but not too sure if it goes
                   with Li)

There are tons more... you'll have fun halping them. Just keep
    them away from names like
    Lee!

| | I like Laura Li and Hannah Li.

    For a boy, Justin Li?

    Kathryn,
Wouldn't your suggestions of Amy and Gary go against your
rule of naming them names like Julie or Emily?

I don't think so, because Amy and Gary end in an "e" sound, but Julie
and Emily end in a "lee" sound.

Amy Li (amee-lee) sounds better than Emily Li (emelee-lee[lee-lee-
    lee...])

| | Thanks, K.C. Yes, that's exactly what I meant. I don't mind the
ee-li sound at all, but I don't like the lee-li sound.

| | Thanks for your help. The names we have chosen are:

Matthew David Li for a boy

Jessica Paige Li for a girl

The baby will also have a Chinese name, but that will be picked
later by the grandfather per tradition. Alexander had his American
name before he left the hospital for his birth certificate. His
Chinese name was not picked for three weeks later and then it was
changed to his final Chinese name a week after that!

    Thanks for your help.
