| | Robin is a diminutive of Robert, analyzed in a previous note. It
    means "Bright fame."

  	Yes, ROBYN is the female version of Robin, which in itself
  is a derivative of Robert.
  	The name LYN spelt this way is, in Wales at least, a male
  name. (Anyone remember the longjumper Lyn Davies, Olympic Gold
  Medal winner, Tokyo 1968 ... set a world record at the time of
  27 feet and something or other.)

  	By the way, I'm not Welsh, but English with global interests!

| | But Robin (with an i) is not necessarily only a male name. In fact,
    I only personally know of women (or girls) with the name Robin.

| | Having lived with the name for 35 years now, I can say I've always
    been happy with it. People do sometimes try to spell it Robyn,
    which I always felt was silly, kinda too frilly or something. When
    I was a child I did occasionally have trouble with it. I was once
    asked to join the Boy Scouts, which would probably have caused a
    stir back then! I think part of the reason for that was my middle
    name, which is Gale. That is really the male spelling. I always
    wished my mother had spelled it Gail which I like better. She
    always teased me about it being a big wind. I never appreciated
    that. I do know one male named Robin too, by the way.

| 25.6 | When I was just a child... | NCMWVX::WARRENS |  | Fri Sep 12 1986 22:39 | 13 |
|  |     When I was a kid, one summer I won a city-wide torunament for
    something.
    I was interviewed for the local rag, and was asked my name and
    spelling. I was into different names then so I said that my name
    was Robin Warrens. It got printed that way.

    When my parents read it in the paper (with no prompting from me
    - a slightly sheepish child) they said the paper spelled my name
    incoorectly. I had to tell them that that was my name now.

    They REALLY didn't like that. I wasn't Robin long.

| 25.9 | Robin is a mans name (traditionally) | WLDWST::GRIBBEN |  | Thu Jul 07 1988 15:41 | 8 |
|  |     My name is Robin also....But I spell mine Robbin...I am a woman,my
    father is Irish and my mother and myself are Canadian. And when
    I went back home (Ireland) for a visit and was asked my name...They
    would all laugh Because Robin is traditionally a mans name....I
    love my name...And by my parents spelling it with two "b's" makes
    it very unique....
