The company is Forte Software Inc. Their product is Forte' (how
original), an expensive ($75K five-user) Client/server applications
development environment. Information Week had a very extensive review
in the May 29,1995 issue, and I have an ISV in Chicago that is now
doing all their C/S dev. in Forte', and they are *crazy* about it.
Since the company does not appear to be public, does anyone know
if, and when, they might do this. Could be another Tivoli Systems...

Digital has been involved in a joint engineering / marketing
relationship with Forte for some years. We have an engineering team on
site in their building.
See the marin::forte notes conference for details on the relationship,
marketing information, contacts, kit availability, etc.

Are these the same folks who produce the "Free Agent" newsreader that
runs under Windows/Winsock? As I recall the FA startup screen displays
a "Fort" logo. It's a mighty fine product, even at twice the price!

| 870.3 | I know this company well | MARIN::DODGE | Mon Jun 05 1995 19:44 | 27 | |
Digital signed a joint development and marketing agreement with
Forte Software Inc. back in July of 1992. I have been working with the
company from day one. I work in central engineering and am assigned
to the Forte project. Our group sits in the Forte facility, not a DEC
site.
Forte (and DEC) began shipping the product in September of 1994.
The combined sales of Forte for the first six months (thru March 95)
were approximately $13M. I would guess that sales for the first full
fiscal year (April - March) from both DEC and Forte will be around
$30M to $40M.
It is a VERY hot company ! There has been a steady parade of
investment bankers vying to take Forte public. Goldman Sachs, Morgan
Stanley, Smith Barney, Alex Brown & Sons to name a few.
I expect the company will go public in the Summer of 1996. I
expect it to be a very hot stock indeed. The company and product
are growing very fast, getting great press, and winning sales at lots
of large companies.
Forte is an object oriented, client server, development
environment. It is sometimes called a 5GL because it is a generation
(at least) ahead of the common 4GL's. There is a notes conference
devoted to Forte on MARIN::FORTE.

Don,
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Will Forte' have a "friends
of the family" list to their investment banker?
