You can buy the book "Buying Stocks without a Broker" for about 
$20 and it lists about 900 companies (& addresses) from
which you can do DRIP (divident reinvestment plans) to
purchase more stock without a broker.
I would also recommend you check out the National Assocation
of Investors Corporation (NAIC) at P.O Box 220, Royal Oak, 
MI 48068.  They will let buy through them the first shares you'll
need to get into a DRIP program.

    In a recent issue of Kiplingers they listed all eleven of the copmaines
    that let you buy shares directly. I will look it up when I get home.
    
    Also, Evergreen (mumble) sells a book (about $20) that lists all the
    companies with dividend reinvestment plans. i.e. companies that allow
    you to buy additional shares directly from them. The book lists any
    added benefits such as reduced pricing, share holding services, monthly
    min&max additional purchases, etc   I will look this up also
