... as preached by Brother Orson Scott Card. I found a tape of this
in the Science Fantasy Bookstore in Harvard Square. Card has the
revival style down perfectly: the accent, the shouts of Hallelujah,
the denunication of the sinners. Very funny, but with a serious core.
Card is a devout Mormon, and detests the TV preachers who try to use
the power of the State to further their doctrine. Prayer in the
classroom? Whose prayer? And why would kids take it any more
seriously than the Pledge of Allegiance? The anti-pornographers, the
creationists, and even Carl Sagan get punctured. This was taped at a
con in Jan '87. Hope he pitches his tent around here some time.
Card: "Let me hear you brothers and sisters, say I BELIEVE!"
Audience: "IN WHAT?"
Card: "Right!"

I was honored to be a deacon at the Revival in question at Chattacon
in January of 1987. Scott Card is a brilliant speaker and the subject
matter, while quite humorous, is thought provoking and, quite often,
controversial. I highly recommend both this tape and anything you
can get your hands on from him in written form. After all, two
Hugos and two Nebulas in two years is pretty darned impressive.

How can I legally (without breaking any copyright laws) get
a copy of this tape? Does anyone know where in the Silicon Valley
(of California) where I can get a copy?

Try A CHANGE OF HOBBIT (213) GREAT SF in Santa Monica. They have a
sister store somewhere in the Bay area too, I think. If all else
fails, locate a copy of LOCUS or SF Chronicle and check their
respective classified ad sections. The tape is offered through
mail order in almost every issue of each magazine.
