| 567.1 | More Eddings and the Tolkien Note (Topic 89) | WOOK::LEE | Wook... Like 'Book' with a 'W' | Tue Jan 26 1988 18:57 | 11 |
| | Welcome, Michelle. If you like David Eddings' _The_Belgariad_ then
    you may be interested to know that he has started a second series
    that begins a couple of years after _The_Belgariad_ ends. The new
    series is called _The_Malloreon_ and who knows how many books this
    one will be. Also, since you like fantasy, you might also be
    interested in the TOLKIEN note, topic #89.

| | Thanks for the welcome, Wook. I've already spotted the Tolkien
    note. I must admit that I came to _The Lord of the Rings_ rather
    late in life (about 25, I think) and I've re-read it many times
    since. I always enjoy it, and always seem to get something new
    out of it each time. _The Malloreon_ is out in the UK, and as soon
    as I finish _The Belgariad_ series, I'll start on that. If a further
    volume comes out in the States, could you please let me know.
    Sometimes things are out there long before we get them here. I'm
    an American ex-pat (been in the UK over 12 years) and I can get
    my family to send it to me.

    Thanks again,
    Michelle

	<FLAME ON>
	I do wish that David Eddings hadn't changed publishers to Bantam.
	There is a wonderful con going on here in the UK :-
           first :-
	release book in Hardback for 10.00 +
           6 months - 2 years later :-
	release book in extra-large size paperback 6.00 - 8.00
           6 months - 2 years later :-
	release book in normal size paperback 3.50 - 3.95
	Is the same thing happening in the USA ?
	I strongly object of this intermediate, money grabbing issue of
	a paperback, which doesn't fit my bookshelves, contains the same
	volume of paper as the smaller edition and costs twice as much !!
	<FLAME OFF>
	If anyone wants the London Bantam address for somewhere to send
	their strongly worded complaints, just say so....

In a word, YES. The same thing is going on over here. In the case of
Marion Zimmer Bradley's _The Mists of Avalon_, i'm still waiting for the
normal sized paperback to come out, some ten years later. I absolutely
refuse to buy that big ugly oversized/overpriced paperback that they
keep pushing. I'd rather buy the hardcover second-hand first.
The only excuse for those oversized paperbacks is when they want to add
quality illustrations (as in the Illustrated _Dune_ with the Schoenherr
artwork from Analog). Otherwise they're a monumental pain.

	I have a sneaking suspicion, judging from the response to
	my small flame, that the last two replies should be a new Topic,
	if the Moderator(s) wish to move them, please do ('cause I cann't).

| 567.6 | A Series You Can Get Lost In! | SIOG::CRIPPEN |  | Wed Feb 13 1991 09:07 | 13 |

    I have a version of this series that I got throught the Sci-Fi Book
    Club. It's comprised of two volumes entitled _The Belgariad - Part One_
    and _The Belgariad - Part Two_ . I bought these probably two years
    ago and have just now gotten around to reading them. I hate that I
    took so long, but as I'm in the middle of my first Irish Winter here in
    Dublin, I guess it's all for the best. My wife may have other feelings
    on the matter though. I tend to get lost in my books.

    It's a h*ll of a read! I'd recommend it to anyone who even remotely
    likes fantasy.

    	So far I have read all the David Eddings Books except "HIGH HUNT"
    could anyone let me know:

    	1.	Where I can get a copy in CANADA.
    	2.	What is it about.

    	I also enjoyed all his book and I would like to recommend another
    author, who got a Favoriable review by David Eddings, Robert Jordan
    (see NOTE 943 in the conference for more info).

| | re.7 'High Hunt' is _not_ SF, it's a straightforward novel set
    during the Vietnam era. Basically it tells of a young man, Danny,
    who returns home after a couple years in the service. (He was
    stationed in Germany.) He meets a young woman, gets together
    with his brother and some friends, and they all go up into
    the Cascades for a deer hunt. A bit dated, but I found it a
    good look into the mindset of the hunter.

    PS I don't know how to get it in Canada, but your local store should
    be able to order it - it was reprinted not long ago.
