Any notes about "Orion Shall Rise" by Paol Anderson?
I couldn't find any...
I think it's mostly great, but a very weak ending!
The characters are very interesting, and there's plenty
of action.
Anyone else read this?

I read it some time ago. As I recall, yes, the ending was a little
weak. Also, he telegraphed his punches if you knew enough mythology.

I also liked it....tho I was pretty sure what was going to
happen by the time he worked his way backwards
but it was an interesting story

I agree with the 7. It's not his best. Try "Tau Zero"
or "The Avatar".
OSR did win the Hugo and Nebula. Who were the contenders ?
It was, in part, plagiarized in "Footfall" but so what ?

Possible Spoilers, so if you haven't read it...
OK, I guess there hasn't been a note on it yet...
I haven't read any Anderson, and I noticed it had one the Hugo and
Nebulas so I tried it.
I liked the 'Epicness' of it, a drama on a worldwide scale; I also
liked how all the people were portrayed as basically sound,
intelligent, decent folk, but with much different ideas and ideals.
The few power hungy, scheming characters where the exception, not
the norm. I thought it portrayed very nicely how scientists and
people in general can get suckered into a big military program with
promises of world peace and tranquility. In the end though, war
was the inevitable result (listening Ronnie??).
I agree completely with the telagraphing, many events were pretty
dam obvious; i.e. three of the most important people from the three
most important world powers suddenly find themselves alone together
in a survival hike. Sure.
And, of course, the ending. Yawn. Nothing really decisive, not
very beleivable, and downright wimpy!
A 7 sounds about right. Almost great, but not quite.
I'll try some more Anderson, how about some opinions on The Avatar,
or the other one mentioned before; i.e. non-spoiling plot summary,
which is better ( ;-) )..

Orion Shall Rise did NOT win either Hugo or Nebula (at least not
as a novel); to the best of my recollection, it was not even nominated
for either award.

Andrew beat me to it. Anderson has won lots of Hugoes and
Nebulae (I think only Ellison and LeGuin surpass him, with
Leiber possibly tying him), but ORION SHALL RISE was not
one of them.
You might have been confused by the usual marketing gimmick
of the publisher plastering "Hugo and Nebula Award Winner"
on the cover of the book. In 99% of the cases, this refers to
the author, not the book in question. It's ambiguous enough
to be deceptive without really telling an untruth.

book won a Hugo and Nebula!!
