| | It would seem to me that some of the routines in STARSSHR (the stars
shareable image) could be used to perform what you want. However,
it would not be for the faint of heart and is very tailered to do
what STARS needs (not to say that it won't work, just that it might
be more work that what you want).

I'd perhaps follow on the DECspell route. Contact the project/product
people and see. I bet that it is all too proprietary to do you
    much good.

| | In my own backyard...

A friend of mine who works for DEC developed a product called
REFER which is being used in VTX among other places. It has
everything in it according to him: COBOL, DATATRIEVE, RDB,
BASIC...It currently has 10 Thesauri, ranging from applications
to DEC software / hardware, Competitive software / hardware...
and it's growing. The databases (which aren't homegrown) are
    	maintained by RISD.

Just thought I'd post it here for edification of anyone else
who comes across a similar need. I'm going to try this out.

It is a full-text storage and retrieval software package written by
some folks in the CXO support center. I don't know much more, but
there is a conference on NOETIC::STARS.
re. .3
REFER isn't a 'product' exactly, it is a VTX infobase applications
that is FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY. I believe that it may make use of
Basis for text storage and retrieval. You might access the
infobase from your local VTX server and see if there is a contact
    person identified on it.
