    Hi, 
    
    I am planning on showing western in some small shows this year to
    see if its something I really want to do.  I haven't show western in 
    18 years so I'm alittle out of touch with current trends, 
    (translation=stupid questions follow) so if anyone can help me answer 
    these questions or point me where to read up on the subject I would 
    be extremely greatful. I'd be showing mainly equitation & pleasure 
    classes.
     
    1.  Are chaps allowed in Western Equitation classes?  If so, must
        they be the fringed ones?
    2.  At smaller shows - is there a particular way I should be holding
        the reins.
    3.  Whats the typical dress code for a small show? (i.e, shirt,jeans,
        chaps, hat - sufficient or do I need to be more elaborate.)
    4.  Types of Hats - is there a rule on size that must be worn (i.e.
        has to be XX inches tall. (okay this was the stupid question)

    Yes, you can wear chaps in western equitation classes, fringed or
    scalloped (guess I wouldn't wear the furry ones!) a hat that is clean
    and fits is good.  You can a wear a shirt and tie/choker, vest or even
    a jacket depending on how fancy they look.  On how to hold your reins,
    index finger between the two reins with the bight of the reins across
    your palm coming out behind the pinkie finger.  The real pros ride with
    their left hand.  I am not that coordinated!
