| Your foal will be 1 year old on Jan 1, 1994. All thoroughbreds are
considered to be yearlings in their second calendar year.
Most breeders try to get foals as early in the year as possible -- late
winter, early spring. Although it has been shown that even fall-born
foals will eventually catch up with their brothers and sisters born
earlier in the year, this doesn't happen until they are well into their
second year. Since most breeders make their money at the yearling
sales, they want their yearlings to be as big ans impressice as
possible.

| Assuming you're in the Northern hemisphere, a foal born ANYTIME in
1993, upto and including Dec 31, will be 1 year old on Jan 1, 1994.
This is true for all racing and most show purposes since the AHSA uses
the Jan 1 date as the universal birthday too.
I believe that the Southern Hempishere uses June 1 as the universal
birthday because their seasons are the opposite of ours(i.e. Jan 1 is
their summer so Spring born foals would actually be 3 months or
younger)

| Is it true that TB horses D.O.B go down as 1st Jan, but that
unregistered horses go down as 1st May?

| The date of dirth on the registration certificate for a thoroughbred is
the actual day the foal was born. When you ask if the dates of birth
for "unregistered horses go down as 1st of May" I'm not sure what you
are asking. "Go down" where? If they are unregistered, it can't mean
registration papers... Or did you mean registered in some cross-breed
registry or other?

| For show purposes, the AHSA considers Jan 1 as the "official" birthday
of all breeds/divisions as do most registries.
