Corn oil helps the skin dryness from the inside out.
A can of Static Guard helps the static from brushing. I use a Grooma
to dig up the dirt. Then a body brush. Then spray with Static Guard
directly on the hair or on a towel then rub with the towel.
I have had some luck with a towel wet with Show Sheen, then rubbing
vigorously.
I sure wish I could afford one of those nice big vacuum cleaners for
horses.

Maybe it was the cold, dry spell we had a month ago that caused so
much static build up and the dust stuck to her coat? Whatever the
cause, it went away magically (especially after I started to blanket
her). Now she is sleek as a seal and seems as clean as if I had bathed
her yesterday (she hasn't had a bath since early Sept.) Poof. no more
dust.
No complaints here.

| Hi all.
I have a slight problem that sorta fits into this note.
Our 5 year old QH mare is losing her hair. Her face is almost bald now
and she is getting thin on her neck. She has hives all over too. I
think it is from flies but I understand that she didn't have this
problem at the place where we bought her from and it is just down the
road. The other two mares don't have this problem at all. Is there
something that she can be fed to combat this? I have been around
horses all my life and never had one that lost its hair. Oh, she is in
foal for the first time, could the harmones be causing this?

| Dandruff/Dusty coat sounds like rain/rot.
We bathed with a special anti-fungal shampoo to treat it and used a
supplement called Ration Plus to help her coat.

| Can the shampoo treatment be done once a week? I only have time on the
weekends for stuff like that. Is the Ration Plus ok for Pregnant
mares?

Hair loss can be a sign of allergies, fungus, stress, or rubbing
due to dry skin.

| We shampooed two days in a row and then once a week. It worked pretty
quickly. I don't know how RationPlus is for pregnant mares.

Your mare's symptoms may be related to her being in foal. I'd have a vet check
it out. She may need some nutrient supplement.

I got some anti fungal shampoo (smells like green apples) and used it
Saturday and Sunday. She doesn't just have hair loss. She has what
looks like hives with no head. There are just bumps all over her neck
and chest. The itch too, when I was scrubing her with the shampoo she
about fell over Trying to lean into the brush. I also saw her rubbing
her chest on the railing of her pen. The privious owners said that her
mother and half brother also have the same condition.
For some reason I thought it was Source that was mentioned here for a
supliment. I know see it was Ration Plus. I did get some Source tho
and it says it is good for pregnant mares and for calming. This mare
is a bit nervous but is getting better with daily handeling.

| Just bumps could be bug bites. Algiers gets huge welts -- bigger
mosquito bite bumps than me!

| The bumps aren't small. They have some size to them. But if they were
bug bites I would assume that she would have them on the underside of
her barrell also. They are only on her neck and chest. The hair loss
on her face is still a mystery.

| Since she started this when she was moved into this pasture I am going
to guess it is from the grass and the flies. She was kept in a dirt
stall before and now is on grass that has browned and is just about
gone. Also, they are with cows. I think that may have something to do
with the fly situation. All we can do is try and keep her comfortable.
I would hate for this to carry to the foal since we would like to show
it in halter. I don't think we would be judged very well for a bald,
welted foal.

| I found out for the previous owners that her dam and sire
both have the same skin problem every summer. They don't do anything
about it. I have found that the fungal shampoo seems to be helping.
