| | Try looking in horse magazines. I frequently see them in a magazine
called Horsemen. Also try Equus. The Saddle Shed in Grafton, MA
has all sorts of video tapes to rent or buy ($5.00/day) if you live
near there, if not check your tack shop. Videos are expensive about
$65. to $70. per tape but they are worth it. Check the Horsemen's
Yankee Pedlar for them also they might have a ad for them (it's
highly unlikely, but one never knows). But your best bet is a western
    horse magazine.

    good luck

Given the high cost of the videos I would recommend renting before you
buy. I have rented a number of them and the quality varied dramatically.
I rented a Richard Shranke (sp?) video on "Bits and bitting". He really
knew what he was talking about but the video was terrible. Whoever
made it had no idea what they were doing. At two points in the video
Richard started coughing and they just filmed right through with him
sounding desperate for a drink of water. The lighting was natural sun
and seeing the bits was difficult due to glare. Given the knowledge he
had to share this video did him a great disservice.
These aren't western but George Morris and Sally Swift both had very
	well done videos. liesl

| | There are a number of video rental clubs available which
offer large selections of equestrian topics. I have seen
ads in the peddlar and other mag's. More and more tack
shops are carrying videos also. Renting would definately
    be less expensive.

I've seen the Sally Swift tapes and thoroughly enjoyed them.

They have videos on everything and more on horses than I've seen
anywhere else. They also have a rental program although I have
    never used it.

| | Western Horseman magazine in Colorado Springs has a good selection
of what seem to be excellent videos advertised in their magazine.
    I;ve never bought/rented any of these,however,so I don't know how
good they are. If they're as good as some of their books, they're
    probably worth seeing.

I have a membership at DAVE'S VIDEO on Rte. 119 in West
Townsend, MA. He doesn't currently have any equine/
equitation videos, but says he'd get some if enough
	members expressed an interest.
Membership is *FREE*! So, if you live in the area, and
wanted to join a new video club...I've already put my
	requests in!
	Thanks,

Sorry, guess I was misleading; I didn't request a particular
video, just "horse" videos - he won't get ANYTHING until he
knows he has enough customers, then he'll order some. Since
I'm more into trail riding than any other type of riding, I
would be amenable to learning about anything! More specifically
dressage, jumping and eventing. So, if you want to start a
campaign there to get in tapes on a particular subject, I'll
	go along with it!

| 546.11 | Instructional Video Tapes | ANGLIN::DUNTON | Node: Was aware of | Thu Jun 02 1994 15:13 | 20 |
| | I am looking for a videotape that provides basic instructions for a
beginner to intermediate rider. I have a well trained and very
experienced 15 year old Appaloosa mare who knows a LOT more than I do!
In her 15 years she has barrel raced, roped, and worked cattle.
I've tried to find an instructor who can give me lessons for this type
of riding but cannot find one that I'm satisfied with. Most specialize
in showing or competitive events which do not interest me.

I noticed in the Jeffers catalog some videotapes for different levels
of riding instruction. These focus on reining, cutting, training young
horses, etc. I want to know fundamentals of handling the western
cowboy horse as well as exercises to improve my balance and sharpen my
(and my horse's) skills. What I already know about handling horses has
been mostly learned from my smart little mare. Can anyone recommend a
good tape (or series of tapes) that contain detailed instruction? Does
anyone have some that they would be willing to loan? (I promise they
will be returned)! Your suggestions are appreciated!

| | I got a new video for Christmas that I highly recommend for pleasure
enthusiasts! It is by Mike Moser & Alex Ross and recommended by AQHA,
I can't remember the name of it!) It is excellent. It has slow
motion, neat little tricks to help you identify movement and where
it is coming from, how to pick prospects, etc. I'll find the name of
    it!
