| | Anyone doing this?

Justin Crocker and I have reached a contractual agreement (based on
some detailed prerequisite criteria - his) that we will team up and
     ride the USCF event.

There are rumors that highly concentrated levels of titanium will
be in the immediate area. Please take all necessary precautions!

                                   :-)

| | I am working registration at this event, and plan to do it too.
(On Chip's former TT bike even! - with only a saddle height
change, you can even borrow it, Chip!)

We've got some great merchandise prizes. Saddles, clothes, tee-shirts,
gift vertificates, athletic shoes, good sun glasses, and of course
    Janeware.

There is a $5 discount (unadvertised) for people who want to do the
event twice. We saw that some USCF men wanted to go hard with another
USCF man partner first, then go later with a woman partner. This is
fine, and we'll give you as big a rest time as we can accommodate.

If anyone is going to be a spectator and would like to volunteer, we
can still use a couple more marshalls, and one more "holder" at the
    starting line.

The 2 person Time Trial is an uncommon event. We've had some calls
from tri-athlete types who were surprised to learn they can legally
draft off their partner in this event!

| | Hi Gerri... See you up there! I read up on the USCF rules for
TT partners but they weren't very detailed. I've never done a
sacntioned TT (team or individual). Will they be taking the last
partner's time (that crosses the line)?

Does it look like a large field is developing for the event?

     Looking forward to it!

| 2750.6 |  | ZEKE::MORIARTY |  | Thu Apr 28 1994 13:02 | 14 |
| | Yes, The second person's time is the one that stops the clock, but
they SHOULD be right behind the wheel of the first! The idea is to
get both partners to cross the finish line as fast as possbile.

We actually had to have the district USCF rep call Colorado to get a
clarification on the USCF and Public rule for a TT. We would have
preferred to have USCF and Public racers be able to form a team, since
many licensed men would have ridden with unlicensed partners. (CAT 5 men
can still choose between the USCF and Public category, as is normal.)
Our team is considering asking for a rule change on this for Time Trials.

We have not received a lot of pre-entries, so your chances are going
home with a prize are very good!

The idea in a TTT is to get the counting rider across the line as quick as
possible, therefore the n counting riders should be in line abreast across
the line. Nit-picking, but let's do it right!

I am ahead of last year... We'll all be in pain. Heck, it's even
painful in July and August! :-)

Gerri, thanks. I thought so, but it's nice to have the facts. I'm
planning on registering when I get there... Will you let me touch
     the C Dale Sunday? :-)

I'm assuming Peggy (Buxton) is your wife? Say hello to her for me.
I'll be there on Mother's Day... She did a couple of our Rte 140
     TT's last year.

And, the coward that I am, I finally told my wife I was going to do
this TT... Well, she's a pretty good sport. Not that she she was
bubbling with support, but I did promise to foot a meal in the
afternoon. Of course, I invited her, but she's not a cyclist and
immediately retorted with, "Why? So I can stand around for an hour
afterwards and listen to all of you relive the race?"

     PEGGED OR WHAT?!! :-)

Who races tandems in the US. Are they generally poorer riders or are
they the better amateurs looking for a bit of fun, or even good
training. Only ask because that tandem time is *very* slow. Even with
average ability, a tandem should be roughly equal to the overall
    winning time.

| 2750.23 | Mt. Bike Tandem | ZEKE::MORIARTY |  | Wed May 11 1994 10:21 | 19 |
| | The Tandem was a "fun" race really. We were interested in seeing what
kind of response it would get.

The pair who entered were Jane Hayes, an expert level mountain biker,
and creater of "Janeware" a catalog clothing company, and Mike Ballou,
the 1993 New Hampshire Expert Mountain Bike champion.

They were on a mountain bike tandem, not a road tandem. Mike was
hanging on the back as best he could. His hand was in a cast because
he broke it last weekend in a mountain bike race, and this made it
difficult for him to hang onto the handlebar. Mike had planned to do
the race with a partner from his road team (he is also a Cat 3 roadie)
but the broken hand forced him into the tandem option.

They were also under no pressure to win, being the only tandem to show
up in the rain! So with this background information, their time starts
    to look pretty respectable!
