Sounds like enough reason for a third bike... :-)

Seriously though, I did somewhere over 4000 miles this year, nearly
5000. In '94, I'd like to spend more time seeing the countryside
doing closer to the mileage that I did in '88 and '89 but without
the back-to-back[-to-back[to-back]] doubles and get the old five
    digit mileage again.

Toward this end (now that AXP has shipped) I have begun regular
(close your eyes if you're sqeamish) wind trainer workouts. I have
found that using a heart monitor makes these more tolerable. I
even have the computer interface (actually it was my wife's
birthday present :-) ) so I can study the numbers to a ridiculous
    degree.

| | Just did my totals for 1993:

    - 2,993 road bike miles
    - running, 260 miles
    - MTBing, 133 hours
    - xc skiing, 32.5 hours
    - rollers, 9.5 hours (and hated every minute!)
    - weights, 12.5 hours

This included 12 road races, 6 MTB races, and 2 running races

My estimate for total hours for the year is 393. I'm interested in
how much time other folks spent training in 93'

Aims for next year - build a training plan and STICK to it, try a few
XC races, more weights and NO rollers ;^)

| | My goal for 1993 was to ride 4000 miles. I fell short of this, with a total of
about 3300 to date. I'll get in another few dozen before the end of the year.
Of this total, about 1800 were from commuting 69 times between March and
October, and a whopping 26 were from two races.
Last year I also rode 3300-something miles; maybe this is my upper limit, given
my free time. For next year, I dunno. Unless my family leaves me alone on a lot
of weekends (hah!), I suppose 3300 is a good goal for 1994. I would also like
to race more than twice next year; I had very bad luck with few free weekends
on nearby race days this year.

| | 6,000 miles, 1,500 of them since October 1! The way winter's been
acting the last few years, I figured I'd get my base miles for '94
    in now!

My goals? Climb better, make a little more money at the crits, and
keep my weight down! Yep, that's become more of a problem, now that
I'm over 40 (says a guy who just wolfed down 3 Christmas brownies!).

Won't give away what I want to do on the Gardner course -- it'll just
    be a surprise ;-)

I guess I'm the lightweight so far...

My 1993 goal was 2200 miles.

I only did 1900 miles plus 23 hours on a trainer. I have only ridden
25 miles since September 25, when my son was born. Hey, nobody told me
that babies take up ALL of your free time ;-)

My goal for 1994 is to teach my son to ride. It's never too early.

Get back on track after a miserable 1993. I was injured and had mucho
    job pressure. So :

    1) 10,000 Km, (6000 miles)
    2) Do as many races as possible
    3) ry to mix training into commuting a bit more
    4) Start to work towards the goal of winning the Provincial Vets Champs
(like a State Championship) RR within 4 years or so

Achieved 1266. I had set the 1250 as a goal at the beginning of the
season and upped it to 1500+ as I really got into a regular routine
    until.....

    	1. Shift lever boss broke off, repaired at frame shop, bike tied up
           for three weeks, one got one bike.....;
    	2. Rear deraiuller went out to lunch resulting in complete drive train
           upgrade (~$250.00 unplanned);
        3. Torn cartlidge in right knee just after hitting 1000 mile mark
           in August.

Overall, I am pleased with the year as many obstacles were overcome and
I still managed to hit my original goal.

| | Well, I did a little over 5k miles including the MB. I'd like to
do more centuries this year (1 in '93).

     I'd like to do a 27 minute TT this year (12 miler). I posted a 28:34
     this year.

I'd like to race more this year (did about 5 races this year as
opposed to about 12 in '93).

DEFINITELY NOT missing Mt. Washington in '94 (even if someone has to
carry my ashes up in their pocket!)

Riding CAT 5 again (now being called Novice) and get point to qualify

Goals: 7.6 miles, 12% grade (Mt. Washington), everthing else is
preparation. OK, maybe 5000 miles, there, I said it. Do I
	have to stick to it?
Stop falling off the MTB. I lost some road miles this year to a
	pair of sprained wrists.
Drink more water, so I won't weigh less than when I was in
high school. My minimum weight is in July. Maybe I should
	drink heavy water? ;>)
Break the pschological 43 MPH downhill barrier. 44 would be fine
for next year. I find the TREK OCLV frame lacking in momentum,
not speed, but the mass part. Doesn't feel solid at speed.
Or am I just chicken? Maybe I'll recalibrate the cyclometer so
it reads slower, so I won't know I'm going faster.

I don't keep exact records of my annual mileage, to be honest I don't
think that it means any more than personal satisfaction. Instead I try
an set targets like "do xxx in a under xxx hours". But for this year,
it probably doesn't make that much difference. The highlights were
about 2000kms, most of which came from commuting with the bike (about a
75km round trip). Commuting was really my only other landmark, albeit a
short lived one as the winter over here has taken it's toll. I leave at
5am to ride in on an early shift, and get back at 1am from a back
shift. The roads are just too dangerous just now to ride at those
times. Injury-wise, it's not been a good year. Broken fingers at the
start of the year had me in plaster for 3 weeks, finally getting my
back sorted out had me off for 1 - 2 months in the summer when I was
starting to go well and then the most recent crash which had me off for
7 weeks. But they say that bad luck comes in threes, so I should've had
    my lot.

Next year, I don't know what is going to happen other than it will be
my last year at DEC. I'm leaving the company in October to go to
university, so the next 9 months are going to be pretty hectic as I try
and sort everything out, including earning as much as I can to ensure
that my 4 years studying are as wealthy as they can be. As a result, I
see most of my riding coming from commuting again in the spring so that
I'm reasonably fit come October, when I can make the most of my
new-found free-time. And I need to steer clear of injury... :*)

| | This years total of 4979 (includes some wind-trainer miles, and I might
put some more on today) is a bit less each of the last two year's
totals. The main reason is that I didn't go on a two-week tour this
year. What kept it up was doing a lot of centuries (at least one each
month, and a total of 16).

Aims for 94: Another round of centuries each month, and BMB.

Well, I made it. My cycling weeks start on Monday and finish on Sunday, so
26th December was the last counting day for 1993 as far as I was concerned.
Anything between now and the real end of the year counts into 1994. It was
fitting also that I brought up 10000 km as I rode past the Matisse chapel
in Vence, a place I pass almost every week.
Highs for 1993:
	- Milan-San Remo on the Poggio
	- A 4th Epervier and another Silver
	- Finishing the Coppi in a reasonable state (and time)
	- Weekend away to the Verdon with the CC Antibes
	- Still having a job
Lows for 1993:
	- NOT seeing Big Mig and Toni the Tiger on the Restefond
	- Getting a suicidal Japanese kid under my front wheel
	- NOT celebrating Roche's retirement with his sportif
	- The weather this Autumn
Aims for 1994:
	- Another Epervier, hoping for nearer 8 hours and to soar up Notre
Dames des Anges like one (Ange or Epervier!)
	- The Raid Leman-Med from Thonon to Nice
	- Some sportifs with the CCA, how about Marseille-Nice or Cannes-
	  Imperia and back?
	- Still having a job

Actual 2430 since I didn't get on the bike at all for 3 weeks on
vacation in October - which pretty much ended the season.

Also to get in a few metric centuries, which I did.

Not bad for Minnesota since according to the weather service we had
between 18 & 21 days with rain per month this summer, and only 3
weekends between April and October where it didn't rain AT LEAST one of
the 2 days. Being the wimp that I am, I don't ride in the rain if I
    can avoid it!

    Goal for 1994 - 2000 miles.

o Target 8000km, actual 7004km (making a big December effort).
o Crack some 2500m cols: got the Galibier - 2645m, a pig - also the
Furka at 24xxm, Grimsel and St Gotthard at around 22xxm, and the
Croix de Fer at 2069m. All in all I logged about 75km of climb
       over the year.
o Did three cyclo-sportifs: Marmotte (175km/5000m), good weather, poor
ride, bronze; Portes du Soleil (185km/4700m), awful weather, good
ride, silver; Megeve M Blanc (155km/3400m), awful weather, fair
       ride, bronze.
    o Didn't do a 300km dayride or anywhere near.
o Didn't go under 40min on the Faucille, but was only 48s away from
       that on a borrowed bike.
o Cycled Geneva-Venice and had a grand time.
o Went to Campag Veloce Ergo shifting - wonderful.
Some memorable incidents in 1993: getting caught in icy rain at
the top of the Grand Colombier and then finding a warm caf, the
Marmotte for the crowds, the weather and the course, the
bone-chillingly cold descent of the Furka, sprinting into Venice
Mestre, crashing on the Col de Joux Plane, and my final ride of 1993
    which included 14km at a wind-assisted 43kph average.

    1994 targets:
o 8000km (again, and why not)
    o A 300km dayride
o Cycle some more famous cols
o Give Mig and Tony a tough target time for the Cluses-Avoriaz time-trial
    o Have a great time

> What's a season?

For those of you who are "seasonally challenged" I'll try to answer
    this one!

For ME, here in Minnesota, a season is that thing that is defined by a
major change - for bicycling the START of the season is when the roads
are no longer covered with snow or ice, and MAYBE the city has
accidentally swept up some of the million or so tons of gravel they
throw on the snow and ice all winter. It usually also coincides with
putting away my skis, and having enough daylight to be able to go for a
short ride without being in the dark and having to fear frostbite!
This year, this occurred on March 23 for me. The END of the bicycle
season usually coincides with the arrival of the COLD north winds,
snow/sleet/yuck coming down from Duluth (and I don't wanna hear any
crap about how a day like this IS SUMMER in Scotland!), and the getting
out the skis to run them over to the shop for tuning!

Now, in here, because of the utterly insane nature of many of the
hard-core cycle-a-holics, general wackos, and absolute riding maniacs,
you'll get a variety of definitions, but in short its when you put away
your skis and get out your bike or vice versa! Even here in MN there
are people who INSIST that its "great fun" to go out in the <10 degree
f (or even colder) weather and pedal around on a bike, through the
freezing slush thrown up by the cars, and taking their life in their
hands. I'm just not one of 'em! I'd rather go skiing. Like Shaw!

Besides, ITS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN! And when that cold wind comes up, and
those portions of the external anatomy get really frozen, it just
detracts from the enjoyment for me!

And, yes Ann you can put away the bike now! Get them skis out - won't
    be too long now!

and I can point out in Graham's absense that Scotland *isn't* cold - it
rarely, if ever, gets to OF. It is just miserable because it hovers
at a temperature which is particulcarily unpleasant - making the worse of
the wind, the wet (yes it is warm enough to be wet) and the cold....

| | The season starts when my beater goes on the trainer (January). I
usually take December off so I can really appreciate all the holiday
stress and pound tons of the worst artery-clogging lard down my gullet.

We can usually get out here (New England) in March too.

| | Ah. I see. We had one of those last year. I think it was the second
week of January. I had my wife drive me to work, and rode the bike
    home. It was tough.

    Graham's still here... :-)

And I agree, Scotland in winter is not that cold. Just the most
miserable place on earth. I love it... :-)

| | re. 18 (My 1994 aims)
Centuries: 6/12 - January was too cold, so the first one didn't happen until
May. I rode at least one century a month (5 in August) from May-October.
BMB - 1/2. Since my training got off to a slow start I knew that BMB was going
to be out of the question. At the end of the 300K brevet I learned of an option
of doing 4 back-to-back (long) centuries on the southern end of the course
during the event. I still have to learn to eat better during endurance events
as I started feeling a lack of energy 1/2 way through day 3, and dragged all day
on the 4th day.
I will exceed 6000 miles for this year - the most miles I've ever done in a year.
