was the chainstays not staying put.

| Yup, but it was Norm's Specialized Allez... He still has it, but
Specialized did replace it with the current year's frame.

It was probably a 1990 model or before, wasn't it? I had a 2300
frame (Black & blue tubes, polished aluminum stays & fork). The
bottom bracket became unbonded at the seat tube and would make a
"popping" sound when I jumped out of the saddle. Trek told me it
was a batch of bad glue that some frames got. They replaced it with
the 1991 (Black and Green/Day-Glow) frame. I have not had trouble
with it since. I do, however, check it periodically.

Re:-2 Hey, I am getting a new 92 BRIGHT red frame w/ the carbon.
The real drag is that I have already missed 2 crits and I am going to
miss a TTT. Boy are the guys I TT with pissed. NO alternate!

Correct Ed. The rear stay simply slid off the bottom bracket lug.
I still have the old frame as well as the new frame Specialized sent
me.
I am starting to have a problem with the new frame now though. Where
the top tube enters the top head lug a white color is starting to
appear. The coating over the carbon fiber is becoming rough and white.
I suspect water has somehow seeped under the coating. The damage
occupies a square inch area on the left side of the tube. Since a
Specialized rep. is supposed to contact me about setting me up as a
dealer I will talk to him about the frame.

| Hey Everbody,
I just finished typing Trek a nasty letter about my problem. I do not
know if it will do any good, but it sure felt good to let off steam.
Afterall, I did miss out on 2 crits last weekend and I am going to miss
out on a TTT (so will the rest of the team) on Easter Sunday. Oh well.

I hate to seem harsh, but Ed's got a point. You missed 2 crits?
Well, then they must be important to you. Suppose something *else*
had happened to your bike ... an accident, in the shop for a week
waiting for parts or repair, etc. Then you couldn't blame the mfr.
or anyone else. If the event's important, get a second bike.

What a bad week in notes...
First, the DAY I got my arc cleats this conference suddenly shifted
toward ARC-bashing, with many riders going back to the black cleats.
Then the note about drivetrain drag on 105 equipment turns into a
Specialized-Allez bashing note, now I hear my bike is about to
self-distruct!!!

I have noticed the same thing happening to my '91 epic where the top
tube joins the "lug-under-the-saddle". Please let us know what
Specialized says, I will check with my shop also...
Anybody else seen this problem?

My Nishiki (DB steel frame, '72) : OK
My Wes Mason (DB steel frame, '73) : OK
My Albert Eisentraut (DB steel frame, '76?) : OK
My (pre)Alpine (DB steel frame, '78?) : OK
Sorry, didn't have none o' them fancy glued-together bikes to check if they'd
fell apart, but mebbe I'll check all my DB steel frames again in another
15 or 20 years and letcha know how they's holdin' up :-)

Re 7 and 8: Yeah, I know I NEED a second set of pedals. Last year I
spent $1000 to buy the road bike, a $1000 on a MTB, plus an additional
$800 on the MTB. All in a matter of 6 months. So as one can see I am
financially STRAPPED at this time for bikes/toys. I have been looking
though, yes I am a gluten(sp) for punishment, another carbon or
graphite frame Trek(WHAT), Basso, or even the Look frame that I dream
about so often. I also want to add a few more dollars to the Trek that
I have or will have, rims and pedals and tires and on and on. I dont
know a Serotta(sp) Colorado has even caught mine eyes and thoughts. Oh
well, one of these days.

Re-1: I have thought about that, but I dont want to chance crashing and
tearing up somebody else's bike. Most of the people I know are bigger

| Hey Everybody,
Well did I sure get a surprize today. While sitting at home, eating
lunch, and working on my homework the phone rang. I answered it and to
my surprize the VP of Trek Bicycle Corp. was on the other end. He
apologized for the problem and asked me if a Trek 2300 (complete) would
be an acceptable solution for the inconvience (I had a 2100). Well I
accepted the apology and ACCEPTED the bike. The letter I sent was
just a piece of my mind, I didn't ask for any compensation, but "one can
not look a gift horse in the mouth". I guess Trek is still #1. I sure
hope that I do not have any more problems. I am thinking about taking
out the Discover card and getting another Trek (5200). Trek did take
the 105 groupo back though, DARN.

| Hi,
As an TREK supporter, I was glad to see that they responded to your letter with
an acceptable solution.
Rather than start a new note I thought I ask the following in here:
What component changes/upgrades have different people made to their TREK 2100s?
What was the rationale for doing so (ie. weight, durability, performance, etc.)
The only changes I have made so far are that I switched to Conti Super Sport
tires after about 3000 miles, and went with a Turbo saddle.
