I have over time used different tools to cut cable housings with
usually fair to poor results. What I was wondering is what have
some of you had as an experience with the different cable housing
cutters (note: I am not talking about cable cutters, I have a Park
and it is an excellent tool for that job). I know Shimano makes one
but I dont know of any others. I appreciate your input.

The Shimano cutter works perfect. I have cut all brands of housing
with great results. They do not crush the housing. They do on
occasion squeeze the inside teflon liner but an ice pick opens this up
very easily.

I use Shimano cutters for both housing & cables; excellent tool.
Frank's Spoke 'N Wheel stores (4 of them) also use this cutter in
their work.

Another vote for the Shimano tool. I even use it to trim mudguard
stays.

You can also cut cable housing with your basic wire-cutting pliers,
avail. from any h/w store. Works great, and it may be something you
already have around...

Funny you should ask that,
I spent the weekend exchanging my under the bar shifters for
thumb shifter. After crushing the inner linning a couple of
times with using normal wire cutters I search around my junk pile for a
better way. What I ended up using was a fencing tool. This
worked perfectly, clipped the end cleanly and didn't crush the
lining. If you don't know what a fencing tool is (I didn't
untill I showed the thing to a friend) it looks like a big pair
of pliers with a hammer on one jaw and a spike on the other. I
think it is also called either a farmers friend or barbed wire
tool. But the part your interested in is the cutouts on the
joint, given that it cuts barbed wire, cable housing is a snap.
